Tom Abell, Roelof van der Merwe, Josh Davey, Jamie Overton, Max Waller and Paul van Meekeren all playing for Somerset Seconds against their Glo`shre counterparts in a One-Day trophy match at Bath today.
Looks like a chance to sort out a few bowling options for the opening Royal London cup fixture at the Oval on Friday.
Cornwall fast bowler George Drissell, who played two matches as a trialist with Somerset Seconds last week, is in the same role for Glo`shire today.

With Dom out, it's likely that Max will need to play at the Oval, assuming it's the usual dry surface.

Completely new look for the board, I see?
I was kicked out, had to get a new password and log back in, and now I see a new format.

Second XI
The radar not quite working for Paul Van Meekeren - a wicket but seven wides in his first five overs.
Josh on the other hand four overs for four runs with only one maiden.

Don't forget that a wide that goes to the boundary counts as four wides - while a too-high bouncer is also a wide - so may not be quite what it seems.

Yes, probably more likely than seven separate wides, albeit might well still be one lot of four wides, and three others, so not great anyway.

Good point chaps - I didn't think of that.
Opps just checked the score card - 15 (fifteen) wides from seven overs!

Okay, so one of two things must, presumably, be true... either:
a) The ball is hooping around corners to the extent that we can't control it
or
b) We are currently being guilty of one of the worst bowling performances imaginable.
And unless we've decided to play this one with a red ball, then the latter seems more likely as the white ball seldom swings?

I take back anything I said on the 'teams for 50 over thread.'
For this first one, at least, Josh Davey must surely play (IF we rest any of our usual CC seamers) as P Van Meekeren and J Overton seem to have sprayed it everywhere (15 wides for Paul, 10 wides and 2 no-balls for Jamie). Davey no extras conceded at all (other than maybe a leg bye or something)

I shall be very surprised if I see either of Van Meekeren or Overton, J, on Friday unless there's a very good explanation for this buffet stuff:
[live.nvplay.com]
53 wides. Only Josh Davey, who had exemplary figures of 2-17 from 8.2 overs avoided this incredible epidemic.
Waller and Abell decent overall figures, though also too many wides from those two.
Paul and Jamie went for 5+ an over with a cumulative 31 wides and 2 no-balls between them, and Ben Green threw in another 15 wides. Unreal. Yes, as SP said, there may have been various '4 wides,' in there, but even so .. with 53 total wides, we may - very possibly - have bowled 8 or 9 separate deliveries that went directly to the boundary, without the help of the batsman..

Another explanation would be tennis ball bounce and the ball sailing over the keeper on the way to the boundary?

One Gloucs bowler managed to bowl 8 wides in 7 overs, but all of the others combined bowled one total wide.
We were bowled out for 114 and absolutely crushed.
Jamie Cox always used to say that playing at Bath was like an extra away game and hated playing there, and this game seems to have been an unmitigated disaster with both bat and ball.

Quote:But Jamie would have played at the Rec and not the North Parade ground they played on today. And from my memory of the Bath Cricket Festival, where I saw most days played from the early 1970s until the 1990s and sporadically after that, Somerset's record wasn't that bad. Or maybe that's just rose-coloured specs...AGod

I would not be against that.
He obviously does bowl but in recent seasons has rarely if ever been used with the ball.
Therefore if Tregs plays (or Banton) we have to assume it is for batting only as we know very unlikely to bowl based on recent evidence.
I like Lewis & Rvdm at 6/7. Both are very able batters and too good just to be used as finishers.
Craig & Jamie bit hitters for 8&9 and if we need 10+11 we arent winning too often.

You don't think that Jamie's participation in today's wides extravaganza suggests that he needs rather more bowling then, WSM?
The figures strongly suggest that Josh Davey did miles better than Jamie did today and so, IMO, he has a far stronger case for playing at the Oval. After all, Davey's figures suggest that he has his radar back after injury. Jamie's only FC game of this season, vs Ireland, did not suggest that and nor does today's trip to Bath seem to have suggested that. I'd suggest that he needs some significant bowling in the seconds before he is in sufficient rhythm to play for the firsts.
