PS I am humbled to achieve the 3500th posting on this august thread.

As I said on the other thread, it is rather obvious that Tres and Caddy will have appeared in the same England side on a large number of occasions.

People have mentioned Beefy and Victor.

There’s a possibility that Brian Rose and Victor would have been another pair that appeared in tandem.

I also wonder if Trescothick was in the England side when IDB was inserted for his lone Test?

Narrow miss AG - Marcus was embarked on his 24-hour flight home (Alastair Cook flying a similar distance to take his place) following his (MT's) father-in-law's sad accident, just prior to Blackie's (embarrassing) single Test.

...PS Tres and Caddy account for 28 of the 46.

I'm upgrading KB to 5/7 as Palairet and Braund is (?are) perfectly correct (2 Tests, 1902).

One pair to go.

Is correct, as it is the answer that is correct, not the people.

Lone test Jack MacBryan? Which would probably mean the other Jack Farmer White

When Blackie played is only Test in Nagpur (one of three England debutants) Marcus had already left the tour due to illness. They did play together in ODI teams, though.

@SLLL good thinking, but the Farmer did not play in jack MacBryan's only Test. (I had to look this up to see if I'd got the question wrong).

mikeindex,

I think we have determined the following 6 of the 7 pairings you have identified:

Braund and Palairet
Rose and Botham
Botham and Marks
Caddick and Lathwell
Caddick and Trescothick
Trescothick and Johnson

I do now know the missing couple but I had to use references to confirm, so respecting the tradition of the PQQ thread I won't post it.

Enjoyed the question - Thanks!

Splendid work KB.
Clue for the remainder: not quite Diamond Jubilee year, but nearly.

Only two Diamond Jubilee years - 2012, and I don't think Somerset had anyone play for England near then - and 1897 so it must have been 1896 or 1898 or thereabouts. Before Palairet's two tests and I think before Braund. Which probably leaves Sammy Woods as one of the last pair but I can't think of another nineteenth century Somerset Test cricketer. Presumably there was one if I am barking up the right stump.

Was the other "one of the last pair" no - balled for throwing?

That's the one CP.

There were certainly some concerns about his action Clarence, as there were for many of the bowlers from the golden age. Whether he was called for throwing whilst playing for England I do not know.

No KB - the gentleman, or rather player, in question was called for throwing while playing for Somerset in 1900, four years subsequent to his solitary Test, by a big, uncompromising Aussie umpire determined to root out throwing (cough Hair uncough).
Contemporary accounts do rather suggest that he was lucky to get away with it for so long.

Not sure if this has come up before but here goes:

Who has scored the same number of test runs as his date of birth (day / month / last two digits of year)?
