September Player of the Month

Having consulted my fellow moderator we have agreed it would be wrong under the circumstances to have a MTWD September Player of the Month presentation for a while.

There was a trophy with no engravings ordered at beginning of season. I will defer this to next season. I am considering a HI Fi Ravi play off in March and make presentation pre season. Or just scrap it and use trophy for April 2018.

Any thoughts?

I think it would be a shame not to acknowledge the performances by Finny and Ravi against Lancs and Somerset respectively, though I agree this might not be the moment to do it.

On the other hand, I feel no enthusiasm whatsoever for holding a Player of the Season poll.

What a miserable bunch of so and so's we've turned into. We were an arrow away from finishing in the top half of Div 1 and people are spitting their dummies out !

Turn the clock back 12 months and the mood on here was very different.

No team has the divine right to succeed - it takes a combination of many factors. We can pontificate about our perception of life in Div 2, if that is to be our fate and reach hypothetical conclusions.

Why not try an embrace the fact that as a club we play at the best ground in the world, we have players who are envied by other counties and a Director of Cricket who has dragged this club up from the depths over the last 6 years. Division 2 gives a perfect opportunity to introduce some young players who crave and deserve first team opportunities. Together with out senior player group we can build a side that will take Middlesex to greater heights over the next 4-5 years.

We have a seriously good playing group - fully capable of winning Div 1 next season if we stay up.

Embrace it guys - and stop bloody whining !!!!

The object of thread was opinion on September player of month. I do not need anyone telling me how I should feel about our relegation , but have said on another thread I'm moving on positively.

I'll respond to morose platitudes as I see fit. Life is for looking forward - not back.

If there was to be a vote for September Player of the Month, then I would give it to Steven Finn, mainly for his eight second innings wickets in a win v Lancashire at Lord’s that gave me great confidence that Middlesex would survive, especially as Somerset lost v Surrey at The Oval the following day. I didn’t really envisage that when I next wrote about his performance, it would be after we had been relegated.

That was not Finn’s only important performance in the month, as the match v Hampshire at Uxbridge saw he and John Simpson put on 35 for the final wicket to earn us a batting point, while Finn took three wickets inside 10.1 overs as help bowl Hampshire out inside 36.1 overs to ensure we had maximum bowling points.

Finn’s performances v Lancs and Hants felt important at the time, which I suppose is why I rate them higher than Ravi Patel’s 12 wickets v Somerset at Taunton, as his performance never really felt enough, plus of course the match contains bad memories for the club.

Just give it to Hi Fi for an excellent spell of bowling on a non tarmac wicket.

And as Snicko says, stop being morose, there is life outside Div1 as a lot of us know having spent many years in the badlands after the split to two divisions and before that lingering nearer the bottom of the full table than top.

Can't wait for the fixtures list to come out now smiling smiley

My vote goes to Morose Platitudes.

It's great that being in Div 2 gives opportunities to young players who crave and deserve first team opportunities. Perhaps if they'd had those opportunities this season we wouldn't be in Div 2.

It's got to be Hi-Fi.

The unfortunate truth is that Ravi's excellent looking figures were not actually that wonderful in the context of performances by the Somerset spinners. The absence of a second specialist spinner probably increased the runs conceded through lack of pressure at the other end but also increased his wicket count, because someone had to take the wickets ... eventually. Sorry, Ravi!

Whereas Hi-Fi had capable seamers at the other end and also had to pick up the baton left by TRJ. A truly MTWD performance.

Although Middlesex will be disappointed that Steven Finn’s eight second innings wickets v Lancashire at Lord’s ended up not helping us retain our division one status nor he retain his central contract, the performance surely played a part in his call-up for the Ashes and in him winning the Player of the Month award for September and Player of the Year award at today’s Middlesex awards lunch, plus it earned him the John Budgen Memorial Bowling Award for the best bowling performance of the season.

The other award winners were:

Geoff Norris Batting Performance Award: Stevie Eskinazi for his 179 v Warwickshire at Edgbaston
Youth Player of the Year: Joe Cracknell
Women's Youth Player of the Year: Gayatri Gole
Emerging Player of the Year: Tom Helm
Players’ Player of the Year: Tom Helm
Disability Squads Player of the Year: Matthew Jones
Women’s Player of the Year: Sophia Dunkley

I feel"morose" is wrong word to describe hoW I am feeling. However, like all our passionate fans we are entitled to feel not entirely happy about our relegation, without it need to be questioned.

I will run a poll on a separate thread for September player of month and present trophy pre season.

Good for you Kev, being a QPR fan you must be used to PoM polls when your team haven't won a game all month.
