Line up for first championship match

If I remember rightly, Barmy Kev gives a miniscule prize for correctly predicting the line up for the first championship match (this year v Northants, at Northampton, starting 5th April). If tie, batting order, as printed on scorecard. I think correctly naming the official 12th man also counts, although with teams naming squads of 13 or 14 it might be difficult determining '12th man' (as in- he might be the best fielder, but was never likely to make the XI)

I think you only get one shot at it as well, so your first guess is your only guess, so JW will probably wait until April 3rd, in case of any injuries, and clean up, but assuming all fit, I will go for-

Robson
Gubbins
Eskinazi
Malan
Holden
Simpson
Harris
Roland-Jones
Rayner
Murtagh
Fiin

12th man White.

I know I've gone for a 'safe and obvious XI'. There might be a chance we start with White rather than Simpson, or possibly White as an extra batsman instead of Rayner.

Stuart Law seems to have implied we are not looking to sign an overseas player, so I guess the 2019 squad is now complete.

Robson
Gubbins
Eskinazi
Malan
Holden
Simpson
Andersson
Harris
Roland-Jones
Helm
Murtagh

12th - Stirling

Can’t see Rayner playing as a specialist spinner at the beginning of April, although his slip catching will be missed.

Robson
Gubbins
Eskinazi
Malan
Holden
Simpson
Harris
Roland-Jones
Helm
Murtagh
Finn

12th man Rayner, because his slip catching won't then be missed so much.

I don't see any merit in having 5 pace bowlers, yet nor do I see any merit in playing Rayner. Nor do I see Harris as a no. 7.

I would give Andersson a go at no. 7 and on last season's form leave out Finn.

Robson
Gubbins
Eskinazi
Malan
Holden
Simpson
Andersson
Harris
Roland Jones
Helm
Murtagh

12 Rayner

First game is always a challenge to select the 11!
I have gone for
Robson
Gubbins
Eskinazi
Malan
Holden
Simpson
Andersson
Harris
Finn
Helm
Murtagh

12th man..
Toss up between Toby and Ollie!

No Toby?
Slight concern about the comment made with minor shoulder strain, just to be cautious with him.

Assumptions : (1) Both Stirlo and Baaadalada are availabe from respectively international duties for Ireland and studies, (2) The Lawman has noted our concerns about over rate, so he relies upon our seamers to both keep on the right side of the clock and do sufficient damage on an early season green - top that we don't need a spinner, although the below gives us both Malan and Stirling to call upon.

We bat deep with Simmo,Harry and Martin Andersson playing as all rounders, and Toby can be as destructive as anyone.

I think Stuart will take the "if they're good enough they're old enough" / "young line and length beats old line and length" approach, so Ethan gets in ahead of Tim, as well as providing a reminder to all that no place is guaranteed.

Gubbins
Robson
Eskinazi
Malan
Holden
Stirling
Simpson
Harris
Andersson
Roland - Jones
Bamber

Right, cancel that, as MA has a bad back.

Murtagh in for Andersson, and as the Lawman has included Sowter in the squad, I reckon he's not just up there to carry the drinks, s0 he's in for Ethan, which selection I make with a very heavy heart.

The fact he played in the warm up match might change things.

Shrewd move, Kev, waiting for the uni game and then going for the identical line-up! I like your style.

I think this is very likely.

Looks like JW might have been out-manoeuvred this year.

That is normally his modus operandi.

The line up at MTS yesterday as posted by Kev looks the likely line up at Wantage Road.

Weather was better than expected and whilst the sun shone, fairly pleasant until late evening when the usual nip in the air returned.

Scorecards FOC were handed out, a large supply of blue seats, a toilet block on site made the day enjoyable. So well done all round.

I believe that for those who required coffee, a bloke with a van was around until tea.

As to the play. Oxford won the toss and inserted the blue seaxes. Steady batting brought about the equivalent of 4 batting points in a championship game.

A declaration at about 5.30 enabled Murts and TRJ to remove a couple of Oxford wickets.

The students fielded well and stuck to their task in the MX innings.

I do feel a bit sorry for the students. I'm not quite sure what they get out of this exercise. They always get through their overs quickly though, so if they can do it, why can't we?

Edit- sorry, thought this was the friendly matches thread.

And I have pulled off a tactical masterstroke. I may present myself with a miniscule prize.

Unless Max can get some runs in the final friendly he might not make the cut.

My predicted line-up is:

Sam Robson
Nick Gubbins
Stephen Eskinazi
Dawid Malan
Eoin Morgan
Max Holden
John Simpson
James Harris
Toby Roland-Jones
Tim Murtagh
Steven Finn

12th man: Nathan Sowter

Before I opened this thread, I had forgotten about Holden’s lack of runs in pre-season, which could open the door for Paul Stirling to play. I would have thought that Murtagh’s recent 54 not out and 27 for Ireland v Afghanistan would ensure he bats higher than 11, although then again, the player I predict will bat at 11 has a Test fifty to his name too.

Well, I do believe that JW wins the big prize!

Yes JW did me on the 10/11 batting order.

I owe you a minscule prize from last season so I will provide a maxiscule one instead.

Next season will changed rules with deadline being before squad announced.
