Yorkshire Seduce New Skipper Adams

Yorkshire have lured Sussex skipper Chris Adams to Headingley as captain next season. Adams, who will assume a captaincy and managerial role, is both surprised and delighted with the unexpected challenge that lies ahead.

He said "I didn't go chasing this opportunity. When it came it blew me totally off kilter - I was staggered by it. The package Yorkshire have put together ticks all the boxes for me. In one regard it is extremely sad because it has been an absolute pleasure to be Sussex captain and help the club achieve so much. On the other hand I have a terrific opportunity to further my career beyond actually playing and that is very appealing. I had nine amazing years at Sussex and I think I played my part in the success we had. But when Yorkshire made their offer I had to do some serious thinking. The most important thing for me was developing a career in the game once my playing days were over. I have a terrific opportunity to further my career beyond actually playing and that is very important."

Sussex are still considering Adams's request to be released from the final year of his contract but a club statement read: "We will consider granting his wish as we recognise the wonderful opportunity he has of going into management."

Adams, 36, who began his career with Derbyshire, is one of county cricket's leading batsmen as well as an outstanding captain who has put Sussex on the map in the nine seasons he has been with them. He led Sussex to the first County Championship win in their history in 2003, and this season he enjoyed a double triumph as Sussex won the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy by beating Lancashire in the Lord's final - and followed up by becoming county champions again.
