Renshaw and the Red Ball
Matt Renshaw returns to Taunton as the last piece of the jigsaw for Somerset's start to the 2024 season. The Aussie will return for the first 7 CC games which take place before the end of May. Somerset start in Kent in less than a month - but who will Matt be walking out with?

On the Brink
And so we move into February. The first game against Kent is in about 6 weeks and it is time to turn towards the 2024 season - our thirtieth season of coverage though most of my records go back to the early 2000 swhen we moved from Rivals Net to Sportnetwork and the present format location. We've come some way since then. Any changes since we last looked at the summer prospects?

What's in store in '24? The early view - Red Ball
With just over 100 days before the season starts and a couple of weeks before Christmas it's a decent time to talk about what may be available for the 2024 Championship campaign. It has been pretty quiet from Taunton about international plans etc and the only real announcement is a change in club leadership as Tom Abell steps down as club skipper to concentrate on his game after 7 years of being in charge. So what do we presently have? What are we presently short of?

Bermuda Days - Day 5 and 6 No Cigar
Storm Phillipe nearly gave Bermuda the title by default when it swept down on the Island and put paid to Day 5 in its entirety. Canada v Cayman Islands and Bermuda v Panama at White Hills were non starters, not a ball was bowled. Day 6 looked to be going the same way as the Cayman v Panama 'Wooden Spoon' game at the National Stadium in the morning was also called off with the end of the wicket being 'wet' and rain flying in in waves and then disappearing as quickly. Would the title decider go the same way?

Bermuda Days - Day 4
With the Tropical Storm/Cat 1 Hurricane Phillipe floating about the place, the top sides in this tournament are looking to add to their position with strong victories. Canada take on the Caymans for the second time while Bermuda look to add to their undefeated record with a second win against Panama. If the rain comes then the points are vital.

Bermuda Days - Day 3 The Deciding day?
Bermuda come into Day 3 as the front runners because of their victory on Day 1 against Canada. However Canada are the side on a roll creating the larger NRR as their batting gets into the groove. Today they take on the Panamanians while Bermuda try and avoid the Cayman Island banana skin as the whole thing moves to a new strip at the National Stadium on an area where there will be a Rugby Classic event in about a fortnight.

Bermuda Days - The rest of Days 1 and 2
After the win by Bermuda against Canada the situation within the qualifying contest became very interesting. There was another game between Panama and the Caymans that day which would show the relative strength of the other teams involved and then on Sunday a second combination of matches happened. Which would confirm or muddy expectations for the rest of the week. Here's how that all played out

Bermuda Days - Game 1 v Canada
Given the state of the weather and the end of the CC season in the South West I grabbed the opportunity to pop off to a little island off the North American coast in late September to watch a bit of World Cup T20 cricket for a week or so. Bermuda, Canada, Panama and the Cayman Islands are looking to get a qualifying place in the 2024 T20 "World" Cup event in the USA and West Indies. It's the start of hurricane season but let's see how it goes. Delray Rawlins didn't come to Taunton after leaving Sussex but let's see if he can captain his island nation of 60,000 souls to the short form cricket version of heaven.

The State of the Nation - Summer Championship 2023
With one4 day game to go in the domestic season and nothing to play for other than a minor place change it may be time for an assessment of what we have and what we don't have with eyes on 2024. Comments below are more than welcome

Back to the Long Stuff Hampshire at the Bowl
Phase something or other of the 2023 Championship starts a week or so after the 'Franchise' stuff finishes and away from home with a fixture in SOuthampton against Hampshire. We have batting coming out of our ears but a dearth of bowlers for this one. We welcome Neil Wagner to Somerset colours but the hope that he would be attacking with Craig Overton and Josh Davey have been dashed as both are out with injury along with Kasey Aldridge. Andy Umeed is hoping to get a batting place after his heroics is the MetroBank. Hampshire will bat first after James Vince won the toss
