First day of the cc season

Cricket in early April?
By Beefy Roberts
April 8 2012

The report from Day one of the County Chamoionship season sees our reporter suffering the weather and our batsmen suffering from Phillander.

It doesn't seem like 7 months ago that we were all jumping about like like mad Easter Bunnies in Leicester. Yep proper cricket is back....Welcome to the new season and we are in our rightful place of Division 1.

The day started well. At 6.45am I was sitting at home was watching England do well in the test match. 7:10 I had a quick shower , picked up my ruck sack and it was  time to go. Something missing . Yeah I forgot to pick up my overnight bag. ( it's going to be a long season).

All aboard the train to London. We met I Luv It (our Chairman) who asks Lower Pav if he's going for day, as he is wheelled his oversized case down the platform.

We have a pleasant walk to ground from Taunton Station, except its peeing down. In the ground at 11.50, it's still raining , with no breeze to move rain clouds away. 12:30 the locals predict mid afternoon play to start and then it starts to rain again, the only place in the country with rain. It soon stops and at 13:10 covers are being taken off and fully removed at 13:40. We have a 14:45 start with 55 overs for the day.

Somerset win the toss and what a surprise they put us in. Dingy Bags couldn't find a scorecard. He coulnd't find a master copy or the line up through internet feeds either.

Denly and Robbo walk out to applause from the Middlesex faithful. Robbo survives 1st ball, 2nd ball caught behind from an unplayable Philander delivery. Lower Pav shouts out " how long is Philander with you". "Long enough to get you out" was a Somerset supporters response.

We move on to 18-1. It's not getting any warmer. Somerset do love appealing. 1st bowling change Trego for Philander. Meschede for Kirby.

The 50 up off 15.5 overs Denly looks good. Then disappointingly Rogers is out , caught on boundary to a nothing ball top edged.
At tea we are 71-2. Malan 11, Denly 37. Straight after tea Philander gives it another massive OTT appeal on Malan, not given out. Rob Bailey the umpire has spoken out before about OTT appealing.

Denly reaches 50 of 90 balls 6 4's. 90-2 changes to 90-3 Malan adjudged LBW off another OTT appeal. AC not happy as he leaaves the field.
More OTT appealing and a MTWD poster who wishes to remain anonomous shouts out " Why don't you appeal louder next time"? We can't complain about the appealing as Dext is clean bowled by Philander. My thoughts are Somerset have only got one bowler.

At 5:30 the scoreboard shows D/L as 1, as we are 116-4. At 117-4 we are off for bad light not to return. I'm very cold but satisfied we held out well in difficult conditions to one class bowler, although an OTT appealer.
