Blocking Beefy's view
By Beefy Roberts
May 24 2012
Beefy reports on an overall disappointing day for the Middle. We hear about information on a new ground for us, an arguement at the bar and bowling changes galore. We get a good feel of atmosphere and some quirky behaviour from not the most exciting day of cricket.
Bit of ground info for starters
- It has 3 small temp stands all in full sun most of the day, with loads of help yourself seats to put up.
- Only 1 scoreboard that doesn't give much info out.
- A really big playing surface.
- Pavilion really nice inside and a great view of wicket from bar, if you can see. Outside view of pavilion bears more than a passing resembalance of the Adams family house.
- River end is west, Pav end East.
- A slow outfield.
Gough Up Please
We arrrive to find out we have lost the toss yet again!!!! Lancs are batting, Murts takes 1st over from Pav end and Corey River End. 2nd ball of Corey's over a very good appeal for LBW but umpire MA Gough not interested.
Another double take, this time we have two Gareth Berg's as Buck is wearing a Bergie top (he was wearing Murt's top in CB40 at Holland).
It's good early, tight bowling as after 10 overs its only 16-0 and with 11 overs gone the first bowling change arrives as Berg (the real one) takes over from Corey and Moore has an aggresive drive for 4 runs off Berg then we get 2 quick LBW appeals from Murts but again Umpire Gough doesn't look bothered.
Soon,WKT as a superb run-out by Denly off Bergies bowling and Horton is trudging back and was about 4 feet out of crease, and its 36-1.
Not long after, it's another WKT and Lancs are 37-2 as Brown is out,c Simmo b Murts.
After a long drive earlier,I decide its time to visit the pav for my first pint, have got a beer called Titanic ( does Berg drink this?) on tap. As I'm waiting to be served a row starts (nothing to do with me),as a Lancs member asks for a pint and gets the usual plastic holder, unfortunatly the gent before had his pint in a glass, the member asks for a ' glass glass' but gets refused,he states the other gent had a ' glass glass' and was told as the gent before was the Liverpool CC chairman he can, but as you are just a Lancs member you can't. The member went away not impressed to say the least.
I return to my seat and another bowling change as Moore goes he was caught by Moggy b Berg the score is 55-3 it was a hooked ball that Moggy took easily, just steaded himself and in the ball dropped. 1st point to the Middle.
Bowling change after 27 overs as Dext removes Berg at River end at lunch score is 70-3 and a perambulation is done. It's our session.
Afternoon session-Prince of Thieves
1st over it's Murts from Pav end and Bergie River End.
I decide to do an after lunch people watch,in our area I noted 3 Lancs asleep,1 doing the telegraph crossword and another dressed for the arctic, but the sun is out,a lovely warm day!
Good tight bowling again, its just 3 overs and 2 runs.
Bowling change at river end Rayner for Bergie after 37 overs, change at Pav end and its Corry for Murts.
122-3 and Prince reaches 50 no and not looked troubled at all.(PA not very good, sounds like he has a hankie stuffed in mouth)
Corey to Croft and a damn good LBW appeal but umpire Gough still unmoved, looked good from here.
Bowling change at Pav end, Bergie for Corey after 52 overs at River end Dext on for Ollie at 56 overs and after 58 overs Rayner for Berg,it was noted that Croft and Prince were very quick between the wickets turning 2's into 3's,another bowling change as Denly is on for Dext after 63 overs. At tea score is 164-3,it's Lancs session.
Evening session. Ch.ch..ch..Changes
1st over is Berg Pav end,Rayner River end. Score gets to 167-3 Croft 50. Another change as Denly on for Rayner at River end afetr 69 overs and Prince greets first ball with a reverse sweep for 4!
Rayner back on at Pav end. Score is 201-3 first point to Lancs.
Change as Dext for Rayner at Pav end (hope you are keeping up with bowling changes!)
82 overs gone, still no new ball and we cant understand why not,Prince 92 no and Croft 72 no. score is 224-3, someones scorecard blows infront of us. Ken said thats the most exciting thing to happen in last hour.
85th over and finally the new ball is taken by Murts from pav end,who gets a WKT first ball as Croft goes c Simmo for 78,PA not go any better.
Score reaches 246-4 and Prince gets a slow, but well desreved ton.
With 5 overs left the large crowd decides to start leaving and we start to pack our gear up as the last over of the day arrives. Session wise its 2-1 Lancs as the points are the same today, end of day score is 276-4 Prince unbeaten on 121 and Proctor 16 no.
Another day tomorrow, lets shope for few wickets for the points we desrve.

Great report as usual.
It would seem we bowled tightly, fielded well (no dropped catches)and got diddly from the umps.
On another day they might have been 6 or 7 down.

A satisfactorily sufficient summary Beefs...
He's quite a player that Ash Prince. Hopefully he'll not trouble the scorers on day 2. The season's been pretty good so far only for a couple of pesky safas...

I'm curious that Rogers does not appear to have a 1 day or CC shirt with his name on.

I can't imagine that Buck's shirt sponsors are thrilled!
Or perhaps you might have thought about sponsoring him, Kev, instead of apparently shelling out for 2 shirts for Murts...
