Catching up with the latest scores in Division Two
There were a lot of runs scored this week: eight team innings exceeded 300 runs in a grand total of 4379 runs off 1245 overs (3.5 runs an over). I haven’t counted up previous weeks so I have no idea how that compares. Put that on the rainy-day list....
Round 4
Leaders Nottingham hosted Worcestershire and while they were unable to break the 300-run batting trend, their South African seam bowler Dane Paterson swept all before him with amazing figures of 8 wickets for 52 runs off 15 overs. Stuart Broad (aged 35) took the first Worcester wicket, Luke Fletcher (aged 33) the 10th and Paterson (aged 33) took the middle eight in a row. Notts’ first innings score of 266 gave them a lead of 107, whereupon Worcester lost their first four wickets for just 32. Ed Barnard then put on 67 with Jack Haynes, and 142 with Ben Cox to bring the visitors back into the game. Finishing unbeaten on 163, Barnard accounted for almost half of Worcester’s score of 339. Needing 233 to win, Notts lost 5 wickets before getting there with Ben Duckett top-scoring with 78.
Notts (21 pts) beat Worcestershire (3 pts) by five wickets
Derbyshire’s early season batting exhibition continued with them scoring 368 all out in their first innings at home to Glamorgan. Shan Masood “failed” by only scoring 60. This time it was the turn of Brooke Guest to score a century (109). Glamorgan replied with 387 with Marnus Labuschagne hitting 130 before falling lbw to Suranga Lakmal, one of Lakmal’s five wickets for 82 runs. Guest went a few better in the second innings scoring 138 and sharing a 276-run partnership with Wayne Madsen (135no) in a total of 349 for 3 declared. That left 55 overs for Derby to bowl Glamorgan out and they managed to get eight wickets before Glamorgan blocked for the draw.
We were lucky to keep the Derbyshire batters under three figures at Lord’s as since that match there have been seven centurions in three matches: Masood 239 v Sussex, Madsen 111 v Sussex, Masood 219 v Leicestershire, McKiernan 111 v Leicestershire, Guest 109 v Glamorgan, Guest 138 v Glamorgan and Madsen 135 v Glamorgan.
Derbyshire (14 pts) drew with Glamorgan (14 pts)
At Lord’s, a century for Mark Stoneman led Middlesex to a 10-wicket victory over Leicestershire. More on this game elsewhere on MTWD.
Middlesex (23 pts) beat Leicestershire (3 pts) by 10 wickets
Bottom-team Sussex almost doubled their points tally so far with a creditable draw at home to Durham. Restricting Durham to 223 runs, they replied by putting up a massive 538 all out, Cheteshwar Pujara stumped on 203. Liam Trevaskis took 5 wickets for an eye-watering 128 runs off 36 overs. Incidentally, Delray Rawlins’ 12 runs off 18 balls included a six and a four! In Durham’s second innings, openers Sean Dickson and Alex Lees put on 313 for the first wicket which is the fourth highest partnership in Durham's history. Durham got to 364 for 3 just before 5pm at which point the captains shook hands for the draw.
