Division Two - a quick update

What happened last time in the County Championship Division Two

Just a quick update on where we were before Worcester came to school....

Round 9 ( I think...)

The top two sides met at Trent Bridge and, rather like the match at Lord’s, it ended in a draw.

More on this game elsewhere on MTWD.

Nottinghamshire (15 pts) drew with Middlesex (14 pts)

At New Road, third placed Worcestershire lost to Glamorgan. Worcester’s Ed Barnard scored 131 as part of the home side’s first innings of 271, despite losing opener Ed Pollock first ball Glamorgan replied with a paltry 139, Joe Leach taking 6 for 44 off 13 overs. Worcs’ 199 all out wasn’t the best response but that still gave them a lead of 33. Not enough as Glammy reached that in 111 overs on the back of 102 from Colin Ingram and an unbeaten 99 from Billy Root.

Glamorgan (19 pts) beat Worcestershire (5 pts) by three wickets

Derbyshire went to Hove, won the toss and decided to bat. They declared on 551 for 8 with Wayne Madsen scoring 176 and Anuj Dal 146. A Mohammad Rizwan 130 wasn’t enough so see Sussex get closer than 337, but Sussex’ bowlers worked Derbys hard in their second innings having the visitors at 54 for 5 before Luis Reece scored 42 to get them to 127 for 7 at which point they declared and set Sussex 342 to win on the fourth day.Ali Orr hit 6 sixes in his 141, Rizwan was not out on 76 and Sussex reached their target in the 74th over.

Sussex (21 pts) beat Derbyshire (7 pts) by five wickets

I can't vouch for the precise accuracy of the batting and bowling points in this table as I've had to rebuild it from the BBC one which now includes the result of our own match. New report out soon, probably next week once I'm back from T20 Finals Day...

Pos Team Played   Won  Lost  Drawn Batting Bowling Total
1 Nottinghamshire 8 5 1 2 32 19 146
2 Middlesex 8 4 1 3 24 21 135
3 Glamorgan 8 4 2 2 22 21 123
4 Worcestershire 8 2 2 4 21 16 108
5 Derbyshire 8 2 2 4 25 22 111
6 Durham 8 1 2 5 26 17 98
7 Sussex 8 1 4 3 23 17 79
8 Leicestershire 8 0 5 3 13 17 53

Most sites (including BBC) don't include bonus points when a match is still in progress, so Glamorgan will be on 145 points if they beat Nottinghamshire tomorrow. They set Notts 455 to win and Notts closed on 19-1, so it's highly likely they will replace us in second place.

And all teams will be showing 9 matches played by this time tomorrow.

If the ECB get their way then next year there would be only one more match to go.

Edit to add- as we just got 3 bowling points, our total is now 138 from 9 matches.

All teams have now completed 9 matches.

Fortunately from our point of view, Glamorgan could not force a win over Nottinghamshire, and the game ended in a draw, meaning we just (and I do mean just) hang on to second place.

Nottinghamshire 159
Middlesex 138
Glamorgan 137
Worcestershire 127
Derbyshire 124
Durham 111
Sussex 93
Leicestershire 66

I think only Leics and Sussex are out of it.

Joe Leach with the prop forwards build is surprisingly agile for a guy of his size as his caught and bowled demonstrated.

After current round of matches Worcestershire and Durham have still played 9 matches, as they sat this round out. Everyone else 10 matches.

Nottinghamshire 174
Glamorgan 160
Middlesex 152
Derbyshire 136
Worcestershire 127
Durham 111
Sussex 105
Leicestershire 72
