Shahid Retires

Nadeem Shahid has retired from first class cricket after ten years with Surrey. Shahid joined in 1995 from Essex and scored over 6000 runs including 9 centuries. He had a top score of 150, which came against Sussex in 2002.

Shahid had failed to claim a regular spot in the Surrey first eleven last season. However he managed to have a stint as captain of the second eleven.

Shahid may be better remembered for his business venture, with former team mate Ed Giddins’s, which was called Nad and Ed’s Christmas tree.

Meanwhile former England A batsmen Scott Newman has been rewarded for an excellent season, with a new three-year contract.

Newman took just eleven matches to reach 1000 runs. This was a club record with he shares with John Edrich. Newman managed an average of over 43, scoring 1162 runs in the county championship.

Surrey have also confirmed the signing of Harbhajan Singh as their second oversees player. He joins fellow Pakistani Azhar Mahmood at Surrey. Harbhajan has played 43 tests and 93 internationals. He has been brought to strengthen the spin options as Saqlain Mushtaq is recovering from knee injuries.
