Surrey draw opening game

Surrey drew theirs first county championship match of the season, as heavy rain meant that each side only batted for one innings. Stand in Captain Mark Ramprakash hit the highest score of the match with 152.

Sussex were all out for 371 with Yardy top scoring with 111 and Rikki Clarke claiming four wickets for the lions. With most of the Friday session washed out, the game was heading for a draw with Surrey needing to bat for most of Saturday to claim bonus valuable bonus points. They did exactly this and Mark Ramprakash proved his quality again with a massive 152. His innings lasted 644 minutes and 281 balls. Thorpe, Batty and Brown all scored half centuries to help Surrey reach 402 for 5, when the game was declared a draw. Brown’s innings of 74 came off just 72 balls, with 10 fours and 3 sixes.
