A Dreadful Finale

For the second time in the last couple of months, high-flying Essex have trounced mediocre Yorkshire. It's quite galling to observe that not so long ago the Tykes were the best team in England, while Essex were lowly also-rans. Now it's definitely the other way around. Four times the wafer-thin Yorkshire batting line up has been blown to smithereens by a rampant Essex bowling attack. How the latter must yearn to bowl against the weak white rose all the time. Very few positives can be found in the away team's pathetic performance, other than to note that young Coad reached the fifty first-class wickets milestone (hopefully the first of many) whilst young Fisher was the only batsman to offer any semblance of resistance during the second innings carnage. This match (which it wasn't!) ended one day early. The visitors can thank their lucky stars that there are two teams worse in the league than them, otherwise they would be paying a visit to Division Two. Quite frankly, our batting is Second Division standard, and were it not for the efforts of Coad and Sidebottom, our bowling has scarcely been much better.

Essex versus YORKSHIRE; in Chelmsford; Monday the 25th to Wednesday the 27th of September; YORKSHIRE chose to bowl.

Essex first innings: 227 (Harmer 64; Brooks 3-54, Patterson 3-66)

YORKSHIRE first innings: 111 (Wagner 3-21, Porter 3-29, Harmer 3-36)

Essex second innings: 334 for seven declared (Browne 83, Lawrence 83, Harmer 58*, ten Doeschate 57; Fisher 3-69)

YORKSHIRE second innings: 74 (Cook 5-20)

Essex win by 376 runs. Essex twenty points, YORKSHIRE three points.

Lyth - The former England opener signed out with two catches and two innings of 35 and a four, which just about summed up his underwhelming first-class season.

Brathwaite - Twas never going to be an easy assignment being pitched in for two matches, and unfortunately he totally failed to rise to the challenge.

Lees - Four runs in the first innings and yet another improved second innings (of eight!) was a fitting end to an awful summer. I hope he relocates to another team.

Ballance - The captain was run out for thirteen and then lbw to Sam Cook for five. His poor end-of-season form makes his Ashes call-up seem a bit bewildering.

Leaning - Jack finished with scores of four and then nine. He and Alex Lees can't both stay in the same eleven. One of these passengers has to be moved on.

Hodd - The keeper was trapped in each innings for 21 and then a paltry six. He also took two catches. He is another Tyke player who is guilty of mediocre fare.

Fisher - Matt bowled 34 overs in the match, at a cost of 106 runs. He also was the only batsman to make double figures in Yorkshire's second innings avalanche.

Patterson - Patto's forty-one overs cost 128 runs, producing four wickets, which was satisfactory. He was unable to repeat the batting heroics of the previous week.

Brooks - JB finished the season with a small flurry of wickets, but his five in this match cost 138 runs from 37 overs. His batting produced scores of zero and one.

Carver - Probably a more potent weapon than the disappointingly ineffective Rafiq, Karl bowled sixteen overs, costing fifty-nine runs, and taking two wickets.

Coad - Yorkshire's most improved player of 2017 finished unbeaten in each innings, and his three wickets cost ninety-three runs from thrity-three overs.

BATSMEN 'CHART' (minimum requirement: one hundred runs and average in excess of forty):

Marsh: average - 112.5; 225 runs; highest score - 125*

Ballance: average - 67.93; 951 runs; highest score - 203*

BOWLERS' 'CHART' (minimum requirement: ten wickets and average less than forty):

Sidebottom: average - 20.72; 25 wickets; best bowling - five for fifty-six

Coad: average - 20.86; fifty wickets; best bowling - six for 25

Patterson: average - 32.78; 23 wickets; best bowling - four for forty-six

Bresnan: average - 32.85; 27 wickets; best bowling - four for fifty-three

Brooks: average - 37.61; 23 wickets; best bowling - five for 113
