I think the picture I posted of Ashwin driving languidly through the off side, shows why I think he has shades of the GREAT VVS Laxman....smiling smiley

Of course the challenge for Ashwin is to improve his record in Australia, England and South Africa... but given the fact that he now has a captain, Virat Kohli, who sees him as more than a containment option overseas, and provides him with attacking fields, plus his own maturing process, where he knows what works and what doesn't outside India should see his figures improve a lot in those places.

Rain ruined any chance of Ashwin joining Clarrie Grimmett as joint fastest to 200 Test wickets... so the Australian legend's 80 year old record is safe...oh well...smiling smiley

If Ashwin were to take seven or more wickets in India's next Test at home versus New Zealand... he'd be the second fastest to the landmark ahead stalwarts like Waqar Younis and Dale Steyn.

With 4 wickets in the first... Ashwin is now only 3 wickets away from 200... will be the FASTEST to 200 by an Indian by far... also the second fastest of ALL TIME... ahead of guys like Lillee, Waqar, Marshall, Murali, etc... WOW!!!

Meanwhile he has continued to contribute with the bat... his 40 was crucial in helping India to the 50+ run first innings lead.

And he gets 3 already out of the first 4...in the second innings and reaches the 200 wicket milestone... FANTASTIC achievement by a CHAMPION bowler...

He displaces Waqar Younis as the bowler with most wickets after 38 Tests, and soon after the Indore match after 39 Tests... He will continue replacing Waqar in that category and then will replace Steyn and Lillee too for quite a few matches going forward, if he keeps up his current form

Next world record is FASTEST to 2000 runs and 200 wickets... that is pretty challenging.... as he doesn't get to bat much in India...

The record is 42 Tests by Ian Botham... Next best are Imran and Kapil both in their 50th Test...

Ashwin has 1510 runs in 39 Tests.. .of course he is already past 200 wickets...

So needs 490 runs in 4 matches counting the current Indore Test to match Botham for the World Record...

That is VERY unlikely

But he needs 490 runs in 10 matches to beat Kapil's Indian record... and become 2nd fastest in Test history to the double double... that is definitely possible...

Ashwin didn't get a bat in Indore... but as a bit of compensation he was able to take 13 of 20 NZ wickets...

I like Ashwin. But that's a record he doesn't deserve. While Grimmett also engaged in a bit of minnow bashing, he took wickets around the world, not on custom made, doctored home pitches.

Apple: Ignoring Shilpa since 27/3/2012 and Birbal (temporarily replying to him since there's no one else here 26/10/2015) since 16/8/2012

apple the ignorant...shows his lack of knowledge of the game

Grimmett never played in Asia, or West Indies... played one series in SA all the rest either in England or Australia...

Btw, his average against England was a humdrum 32 runs per wicket... and strike rate of 80+ balls per...

So he engaged in some serious MINNOW bashing... against SA and WI who were minnows back in the 1930s and 40s...

Meanwhile Ashwin continues tearing up the record books...with each Test... he has MOST wickets per Test since Test number 38... and forward...

Tremendous achievement by the Chennai lad.

Two more Michelles and a Ten-for....

Sanjay Manjrekar on commentary pointed out that he now has FIVE separate weapons each with its own subtlety of angle, length and pace... DAMN!!!

He is named Test Cricketer of the Year for 2016.... Totally deserved... Brilliant match winner with ball and bat...

Even with a sports hernia (which can be very painful) he persisted and played all 5 Tests... and contributed in each.

Will now earn a well deserved rest...until the next Test series against Bangladesh and Australia...

And before people start saying... oh Ashwin hasn't been that great in Australia... remember Lillee averaged 100+ for three wickets he took in Pakistan...and NEVER played in India...smiling smiley

If he scores 150 or more in next 4 Tests he will beat Imran and Kapil to 2nd Fastest to 2000 runs and 200 wickets...only behind Ian Botham.

It must be remembered that Ashwin has rarely batted at 6 while Botham batted at 6 for most of the time....

Even in this match versus Bangladesh he was demoted to 7... and Saha moved up to 6....

Ashwin establishes ANOTHER WORLD RECORD... fastest to 25 Five Wicket Hauls... in only 47 Tests... next best is Hadlee who did it in his 62nd Test...

If he gets 4 more 5 fors in his next 5 Tests...he will have 29 in 52 Tests... It is widely accepted that a 5-for for a bowler is like a 100 for a batsman...

Bradman had 29 centuries in 52 matches... and if he achieves that, Ashwin will indeed be the Bradman of bowling.

FASTEST to 2000 Runs and 250 Wickets... I know it is a somewhat artificial milestone...but no more artificial than fastest to 2000 runs and 100 wickets... which Cr@pinfo has been touting Moeen Ali for reaching faster than anyone...including Gary Sobers...smiling smiley

I still think he can be the ONLY player in Test history to reach the 5000 run 500 wicket QUINTUPLE DOUBLE... but before that he needs to match Kapil's QUADRUPLE DOUBLE of 4000+ Runs and 400+ wickets...smiling smiley
