In a home Ashes year, the Australian performance against India at Sydney is looking rather tasty for England. India 622-7 dec, Australia 236-6

Their batting may look different with Smith, and possibly Warner back in the fold. Bancroft not finding life so easy back at the crease, the Big Bash not the easiest format to find form. Doing a bit better today.

I am not among those taking pleasure from the current state of Australian cricket. I am hoping for a revival over the next few years and a serious Ashes contest in the summer. We have already lost West Indies from the top table, possibly irrevocably, and that has done cricket no good at all.

As long as it doesn't include people who, while capable, bring the game into disrepute or operate against the rules of the game they get paid to play.

I'm moderately happy for Steve Smith to take the field for his country again BUT if he EVER gets caught doing the same thing again he should NEVER play the game again professionally even if he is 'world class' on the field and the best his country has.

The players have to be good and honest one does not exclude the other.

Well done India on their series win in Australia. It might all be very different this summer, but we should at least win the battle of the swing (and maybe even spin)

Interesting article by Mike Atherton re changes in Australia's domestic cricket structure and the demise of their Test team. Too much to expect the ECB to pay more than lip service to it.

You'll be lucky if they do even that.

Another Taunton-born cricketer is continuing to make good. Opening batsman Rob Newton has signed a new three-year deal with Northamptonshire.

Jamie Overton 3-24 off 7 and Lewis Gregory 1-28 off 8 as the Lions bowled out India A for 121 this morning.

Ben Duckett (70*), Sam Hain (12) and extras the only contributors to make double figures as the Lions dragged themselves over the line with one wicket in hand.

I think that may be the last of the Lions' one day games (in which they have generally been trounced by strong India A teams)? From cursory glances at the cards as they've happened, I'd say Davies, Billings and Gregory have had pretty good returns, while Jacks, Hain and Carter have had poor series; Duckett has also struggled - until winning today's game with the bat in outstanding fashion!

Jove seems to have been hot and cold, while Dom Bess hasn't played much (as LoL pointed out) - but then he doesn't play much in our Somerset 50-over games, so I'd hope the four-day games will be more his thing.

The T20 leagues will be after this young Hazratullah chap - ninety minutes' work has probably increased his net worth by about a million dollars.
Is Dehradun a particularly small ground, I wonder? I'm sure several of our posters are familiar with it.
