For VAR read DRS

English football is having a heap of trouble with the introduction of VAR, but cricket isn`t escaping either with DRS - and, inevitably somehow, it is a Somerset player who has suffered

When Tom Banton was given out lbw to Trent Boult early in the deciding 20/20 against New Zealand this week, the ball tracking shown both to the third umpire and on the big screen indicted that the delivery would have smashed into middle and off, half-way up.

Only trouble was that it was the ball BEFORE, which Banton had actually straight-driven for six. Jonny Bairstow at the other end kept pointing this out to the umpire, who asked `what is going on here?`. And even when the right delivery was unearthed, it was shown hitting Banton`s front pad, when in fact he was given out on the back pad.

You couldn't make it up - except that they did.
