Thanks Kev. As Berkshire won with only 4 balls to spare, it seems the match could've been less close, had one of our main seam bowlers not gone for 41 in his 3 overs. Fortunately we're well stocked in that department, with Helm and Bamber waiting in the wings ahead of that gentleman.

I also note that a certain C Peploe played for Berkshire in this fixture, and seems to have batted them to the verge of victory!

Middlesex beat Essex by nine wickets with 11.3 overs remaining in a Second Eleven Trophy match at Billericay today thanks to centuries from Sam Robson and Paul Stirling.

After scoring 94 for Berkshire in Sunday's match, Dan Lincoln was part of the Middlesex 2nd XI side today and scored 24 not out, coming at 3 in ahead of Max Holden, Jack Davies and George Scott.

After Middlesex yesterday won a Second Eleven Trophy match by nine wickets with both of our openers scoring a century, today’s match in the same competition v Somerset at Radlett saw our opponents win by nine wickets with both of their openers reaching three figures.

We had a strong line-up, with nearly the whole side having between a good chance and a certainty of playing in our Royal London Cup campaign, but the only players who passed 23 in our total of 278 were Nick Gubbins with 92 and George Scott with 97. Somerset achieved their target in 40.2 overs.

Somerset two openers, Tom Banton 20 years old, Eddie Byrom 21 years old

Ben Green who took seven wickets is 21 years old. The future look bright for Somerset with such young players coming through.

I hope Middlesex have also got young players comimg through!

Mike

We have a promising youngster called Tim Murtagh...

George Scott, Ethan Bamber, Martin Andersson, Robbie White...

I remember John Arlott's Sunday League commentaries when any player under the age of 25 was described as "promising". Sad fact is that an awful lot of promising players don't fulfil that promise, whether because of injury, being not quite strong enough mentally, thinking you've made it before you have, drugs, sheer bad luck or some combination of the above. I think it is even more true in football (*) but in any sport, you can never rely on potential becoming actuality.

Adelaide

(*) You may of course win the Youth Cup but then be loaned out by a big club to the lower leagues for years on end.

It seems our 2nd XI beat Hampshire by 5 wickets in a one day match today, but it all seems to be a closely guarded secret, with no links to a scorecard, or tweets about individual performances from either Middlesex or Hampshire.

Can anyone help out with a scorecard?

The scorecard of this match can be viewed on Middlesex’s official website, although for some reason it seems that you have to log into the website or register for the website. However, the registration page asks for a membership number, so it would be a bit pathetic if someone isn’t allowed to do something as simple as view a 2nd XI scorecard if they aren’t a member.

James Harris and Ethan Bamber bowled economically, and Max Holden and Harris both hit centuries, which is great news considering the latter two both have a good chance of playing in our remaining Royal London Cup matches, while Bamber may be involved too.

Pathetic indeed.

I did notice earlier in the day that there appeared to be a live video stream you had to log in to view, but I assumed that was something to do with Hampshire, as the game was played at Newport, Isle of Wight, and I saw no point giving Hampshire my details.

I'll dig out my membership card, which is upstairs sometime tomorrow, just so I can gain access to this top secret second XI scorecard.

The following scorecard is brought to you by chunkyleaks.

Hampshire 307- 5 from 50 overs

Weatherly 5, Soames 70, Came 88, Organ 91, Middleton 23 not out, Metzgar 12, Harrison 1 not out

Bowling- Harris 10-0-43-1, Bamber 10-1-53-2, Barber 6-0-41-0 (5 wides) , Rayner 10-0-71-1, Walallawita 6-0-45-0, Hollman 8-0-53-0

In reply Middlesex 310-5 in 44.3 overs.

Cracknell 24, Holden 118, Robson 5, Lincoln 1, Davies 12, Harris 128 not out, Rayner 4 not out.

Dale 10-0-70-2, Goodey 9.3-0-69-2, Weatherley 7-0-34-0, Southon 4-0-25-1, Birts 7-0-61-0, Harrison 5-0-33-0, )rgan 2-0-14.

I hope this is Hampshire nonsense, which we agreed to go along with, and not a permanent change of policy.

How the hell can a second XI scorecard be top secret, with no tweeted updates by Middlesex and Hampshire as the day went by, and no way to get the card unless you are a member.

How strange.

Today twitter acknowledges we have started a three day game, and provides a link to the score.

I hope I'm wrong, but I have a horrible feeling yesterday may have been a dummy run for next years 50 over competition, with counties instructed not to mention a match is taking place, and no way to get the scorecard if you are not a member.

Probably find we will have to pay for live video streams next year if we want to watch one camera coverage of the 2nd XI 50 over comp. Looks like the ECB might not even want links to scorecards in the Development competition if they can possibly help it.

Thanks, Snicko, Yes. I know it is today.

But not for yesterdays 50 over match, where there was no publicity, and you had to be a member (logged in) to get scorecard.

A worrying development, which I think may be to do with next year.

Edit to add (but you couldn't do this yesterday)

2nd edit- I assume everyone can read attached scorecard- and not because I'm logged in to Middlesex site? Yes? No?

It was there yesterday - and has been for every game this season (and most of last year if I remember correctly).

No it wasn't.

I promise you.

You had to be a logged in member (and that's never been the case in the past).

Even when Jonathan provided the link last night I couldn't read it (because not logged in)

Also, yesterday cricinfo provided links to 2nd XI matches, but when you clicked on scorecard you couldn't get it.

So it seemed like a deliberate wall of silence.

Hants 432 all out, and in reply so far Middle 189-2

17 year old Josh de Caires (son of you know who) 104 not out.

His second century of the season for the 2's, having made 157 not out a couple of weeks ago.

Clearly one to watch.

We lost.

Hants 432 and 103-1 dec, Middx 256-3 dec (De Caires 118) and 161.

A number of unfamiliar names in our line up. Names I don't even recognise from the elite (formerly known as academy) group, because I suppose at this time of year a lot of them are still at school or college.

I assume the unknowns were slightly older club players.

Middlesex have a link with Berkshire in order to provide player pathways and 6 of the 12 players who played for Middlesex in this match played for Berkshire in the Minor Counties Championship in 2018.

Joe Cracknell - Middx Academy

Jack Davies - Middlesex Contract

Toby Greatwood - Wargrave CC

Dan Lincoln - Finchampstead CC

Andy Rishton - Hampshire Academy & Eng U 19

Euan Woods - Surrey Academy & Eng U 19

From the 2020 Season Minor Counties Cricket will receive more funding from the ECB and the name will be changed to National Counties Cricket Association. It is planned that each National County will play one Home match against a first class county next season
