Stevie Eskinazi appointed Middlesex captain for the Bob Willis Trophy

The unavailability of Peter Handscomb for Middlesex in 2020 left the role of captain for our four-day matches vacant. I assumed that Sam Robson was the club’s vice-captain and would thus be favourite for this role, but the role has been awarded to Stevie Eskinazi, with Toby Roland-Jones being vice-captain.

Maybe a factor in Eski being awarded the captaincy at Robbo’s expense is due to Eski (aged 26) being five years’ younger and therefore being seen as likelier to take the role on a permanent basis later down the line. If so, it is great to see the club having an eye on what I have confidence could be a bright future for the club considering we have a few exciting youngsters. It is just a shame that our County Championship performances post-2016 coupled with the 2020 competition being cancelled caused us to lose the momentum from our title win, has put us back to the drawing board, and means that we can’t play in division one until 2022 at the earliest. Hopefully this squad will win the Championship at some point and not get relegated the following year!

Both Eski and TRJ will captain sides in a two-day inter-squad match at Radlett beginning tomorrow which will be live-streamed.

Unless someone is a Brearley, it's usually best for the captain to be someone who would be a cert for the team and I do wonder whether Eskinazi really falls into that category. It is only a stopgap before next season of course and there is no promotion to aim for.

So why not Robson? Perhaps he did not want the role. Or perhaps what seems to be the dissatisfaction with the Malan regime extended to him. Or - a third perhaps - is the vice-captain role seen more as a reliable pair of hands when needed rather than the successor?

Realistically the message is that there is nobody at the club (apart from Morgan of course) who is leadership material.

Interesting comments

Actually Murts Looked the senior guy out there today

Sam will definitely have gone through a learning curve in this (Hants) game. Difficult to get those last few wickets, but needed to stick with the bowlers who were getting the job done!

Runs lack of first up, was the reason for losing this game. As stated by the coach last year. Benchmark 350 plus as it is usually easier to bat then. Third knock less so if in deficit. That being 44 was crucial in this game.
