Jon Lewis has decided to stand down as skipper of Gloucestershire after just three seasons in charge. Lewis (33) claims he wants to concentrate on his own game and in interviews with the BBC and The Bristol Evening Post admitted he found the captaincy a difficult and demanding job.
Dave Bridle - an appreciation.

After a few years living away from Bristol, the first person I saw on my return to the County Ground at Bristol was Dave Bridle. He greeted me as if I’d never been away. It was way back in 1957 that I first paid a visit there. The ground-staff were cutting the grass in April - it was the Easter school holidays - and Dave was also the first person to speak to me on that occasion.

In interviews published in the Bristol Evening Post, Jon Lewis gave a number of reasons why Gloucestershire had such a poor season but curiously enough did not mention his own patchy form. He also didn't highlight his wretched, uninspired captaincy which clearly led to despondency amongst his bowling colleagues which quickly spread like wildfire throughout the team and long-suffering supporters.
Kadeer & Taylor give Glos hope of salvaging a draw

Kadeer Ali led a spirited fight-back as Gloucestershire attempted to achieve an unlikely draw against Essex. Having recovered somewhat from a precarious 89-5 to 163-5 at lunch, a clattering of wickets soon afterwards saw them dismissed for only 195, thereby managing no batting bonus points. Once again, careless shots proved the downfall of many batsmen.
Beating Essex would be a morale-raising finale!

The county championship season comes to a conclusion this week with our home game against Essex. Although it’s fair to say the weather has not helped us on a few occasions, if we fail to win this game it is likely to be the very first season during which we have failed to win a single championship game - not an enviable record.
Inept bowling costs Glos dear

We’ve seen some inept bowling performances from Gloucestershire in recent seasons, but this must surely rank amongst the worst. I followed the entire game via the local radio commentary and at times it was nothing short of embarrassing. Once again we were faced with the curious business of Gidman returning to the side and taking the captaincy from Jon Lewis even though Lewis was in the side.
Tense finish as Glos beat Middlesex to go top.

Gloucestershire gave a surprise debut to Australian Brendan Drew, and after Middlesex won the toss and elected to bat first, made the best possible start with Lewis & Kirby bowling with accuracy and getting movement off the wicket to reduce Middlesex to 15-3. Andrew Strauss was caught behind for a duck to the first ball he received from Lewis.
