PRE-SEASON ROUND 3: A GLASGOW KISS?
Bhatti: v old mates?
By Devonport Lad
September 15 2026
Many years ago my then boss was, amongst other things, a grizzled veteran of many seasons of rugby played at a reasonably high level. I mentioned a game that he was due to play on Sunday of that weekend and naively suggested that it should be a fairly easy recreational run out. Quick as a flash he snarled that "there's no such thing as expletive deleted "Sunday rugby"! His meaning was clear; every game requires the same positive mindset and to a certain extent the term "friendly" as applied to pre-season games is a similar misnomer. It'll be played in great spirit, but "friendly" is not necessarily the first term that comes to mind as we go head-to-head (hopefully not literally despite my opening title) against Glasgow Warriors this Friday at Old Anniesland.
I'm never quite sure whether pre-season games are designed to ask questions of the coaches and the squad as the new season approaches or to answer them. To be fair it's probably a bit of both, but as supporters we tend to look at these games for indications of how well we've prepared during the summer, to spot clues as to how the game strategy may have evolved and speculate on what we can expect to see from the team in the new season. Probably at the forefront of a lot of supporters' minds will have been concerns about how JvG and his coaching team will adapt to the departure of the likes of Thomas du Toit, Francois van Wyk and Alfie Barbeary which, on the face of it, removed a considerable amount of try scoring firepower from a team which seemed at times to rely on forward dominance rather than exploiting an incredibly talented backline.
Glasgow will be formidable opponents on Friday; arguably just what we need before the game against Harlequins who will be coming off the back of two PRC matches, so how do we look? At times, especially towards the end of last season, there was an uneasy feeling that other teams had worked us out and that we needed to make a change to the gameplan which had become our DNA over recent seasons and a lot of fingers were crossed that the addition of Mike Prendergast might be a catalyst for that. But, going into the toughest of our pre-season games have we seen the signs? I think we have. A loss is a loss, but JvG would probably argue that we learned a great deal from the defeat at Perpignan where a pack which didn't contain many of those that we would expect to see in the Prem went solidly toe to toe with a Top 14 side who were further into their pre-season than we were. The performance of the "young guns" against a much more experienced Sale was equally creditable in its own way and reinforced our strength in depth. And that brings me to the Bedford game.
For the first 30-odd minutes it wasn't a pleasant watch for the BB&W supporters. The gameplan looked jaded, the execution was poor and defence at times optional. And then somehow a switch was flicked. between minutes 46 and 66 we saw the Bath that we hope will be the hallmark of our strategy for 26/27. Lightning-fast transition, speedy, accurate passing and relentless all-court attack backed up by resilient, dominant defence. That's more like it but, and it's a big but, we've yet to see a consistent performance over 80 minutes.
Perhaps Glasgow will be where it all comes together. The Warriors have so far played only one pre-season game, fielding a blend of senior professionals with young talent from their academy graduates against a much-changed Newcastle Red Bulls team who ran out 47-31 winners. Amongst the new signings for Glasgow was hooker Ottavio Tuipolotu, which raises an intriguing possibility if Kepu is selected at 2 for Bath in this game! Both teams have testing competitive fixtures on the following weekend, so you would imagine that at some point during the game we will see something like their first choice 23 playing together.
For Bath, we know that Ben Spencer won't be available for a while yet, so it will be interesting to see whether Tom Carr-Smith or the increasingly impressive Bernard van der Linde get the starting nod at 9. It was a relief to see Will Stuart back in action last Friday and most of our key players seem to be available although we haven’t yet seen the likes of Charlie Ewels, Will Muir, Finn, Jaco Coetzee, Guy Pepper and of course Jamie Bhattie who, you would think, would love to get a run out against Glasgow.
There were hints of something special in the way that Bath played during the "purple patch" against Bedford. I'd like to think that we'll see more of the same against Glasgow with less reliance on the kick-chase game and forwards although we've already seen that the rolling maul is alive and well and available in the back pocket if we need it!
You get the impression that JvG selected these pre-season games with a view to building up the intensity before the start of the Prem. If we kiss Glasgow goodbye with a convincing performance, then the signs will be good.

Hopefully we will see a few of those who have yet to start. Maybe not Finn Russell but it would be good to know if Charlie Ewels, Will Muir, Jaco Coetzee and Guy Pepper are fit and ready for season proper.
Hopefully too the defensive disarray of last week's first half has been addressed and the fluency in attack of that third quarter evolved a step further.

The national motto of Scotland is Nemo me impune lacessit and I suggest we adopt it. It has more fancy translations, but I think we take it as [said in a strong Glaswegian accent] Don't you mess wi' me pal!

He still found time for an excellent preview. Many thanks.
And of course- many congratulations!

I hope Devonport Lad won't mind me sharing the fact that it is his 50th wedding anniversary this week
Many congratulations DL! Hope you have a fantastic day celebrating.

Watched Ben Youngs and Dan Cole reviewing the PREM for the coming season and they both had Quins in the Bottom 2 and Bath and Saints in the Top 2. An away win at Quins would be a good start!
I feel rather inadequate as Devonport Lad and Mrs Devonport Lad celebrate a 50th anniversary.....whereas my wife and I are only celebrating 37 years tomorrow (Alabaster in case any one is interested)

Something like that BSJ, but without Beno as trs suggests. Also-we have not seen Guy Pepper yet, or Louis Henessey so I would hope they will get a runout.

PG, Louis Hennessey got some game time against Bedford. It looked as if he pulled up whilst following Henry Arundell; hopefully nothing serious.
I pulled a hammy watching Henry Arundell from my sofa, so I can't say I'm surprised.

Hopefully it will be an entertaining match befitting of two of the more entertaining teams out there. Don’t really know what to expect from the Glasgow line up - the official blurb says that the team will be stronger than against Newcastle, but to be honest we couldn't really be much weaker. I don't expect many, if any, of the 20 or so players we had away on the crazy summer world tour to play, though Franco has sometimes integrated some early and allowed them to rest later, so you never know.
As you say, I bet Jamie Bhatti will be well up for this one. He was liked here, but I think most people recognise it was the right decision to let him move on - he had slipped to 4th in the pecking order at loosehead, but probably still had the salary (and salary expectations) of a front-liner. And aged 33, and out of the Scotland picture, there was no SRU drive to keep him. We'll all hope he has a good year or two with Bath.
Replacements (alphabetical): Jamie Bhatti, Tom Carr-Smith, Ieuan Davies, Ciaran Donoghue, Dan du Preez, Tom Dunn, Austin Emens, Arthur Green, Archie Griffin, Charlie Griffin, Jack Harrison, Will Jeanes, Scott Kirk, Ross Molony, Cameron Redpath, Miles Reid, Ewan Richards, Quinn Roux, George Timmins, Kepueli Tuipulotu, Claudius Wheeler, Jack Woods
Give or take it looks like a pretty much full noise Bath lineup?
Glasgow are a mix of academy and fringe players.
Still no Coetzee and no Sela again. Hopefully Arundell just having the night off
Wonder if something has been negotiated on Carreras' availability? Was only playing for Argentina a couple of weeks ago so hasn't had much of a break at all this summer

Great squad but do we really need 4 Looseheads?
Yes it seems a lot! I assume that they are just giving Beno a 20 min runout or something but it does seem at least 1 loosehead (and 1 hooker, 1 scrum half) heavy.

Is Coetzee still not fit???
Also where is Sela???
I am surprised with Finn, Pepper, Santi and Josh.
JVG and the team have a serious problem getting everybody in.....

"Louie Hennessey, Will Muir, Sam Underhill, Tom Dunn & Tom de Glanville
All five players required shoulder procedures following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season and have been rehabilitating with the club’s medical team. All five are preparing to start the 2026/27 season. "
Think the language here from last month is intentionally vague. Possible he's had a setback but this suggests 'there or thereabouts' the start of the season
I jest, as I of course understand the concerns, but I'm hoping we're just returning the long term injured in a timely manner and easing those still on their summer breaks (Pepper, Finn, Santi) back in gently with some game time. Amazing to see Stuart back in the 3. And I like the idea of DDP coming off the bench a la JC23. My one concern is that JC23 hasn't featured in any game yet but fingers crossed he's on track. Interesting that BVDL starts ahead of TCS- a real toss up between them as to who wears 9 in Spencer's absence.
Should be a fun watch. Feel like the season almost starts tonight.

Beginning to wonder if we’ll ever see Jaco play for Bath again. Fingers crossed we don’t pick up any injuries.

Is it correct that some of the internationals won’t be available next week for a Prem match but are allowed a run out in tonight’s preseason?
My understanding is that friendlies don't count as breaking the stand down period so yes in theory someone could play tonight and still be ruled out for next week. I think someone worked out Finn's mandated rest ends a day or two after the Quins game but I suspect he and others will be available for league action unless we hear otherwise. Santi is the outlier for me so would be interesting to hear what his status is
Guy Pepper played 30 games so again is ok.
Pre season friendlies are ok in the 2nd Five week block, it’s competitive matches they can’t play in.

The players will be protected during the season with a managed playing time. They will be required to have a recovery weekend after a block of four match weekends or two recovery weekends after a block of eight match weekends.
In return, the France national team head coach, Fabien Galthié, will not be able to use these players more than nine times during the international season.
Plus French player don't get the added stress of Lions games, is it any wonder France does so well in the big competitions?

Any idea why Glasgow have thrown the towel in on a home game?

Hoping this is indicative of a change of approach,
Ref seems to be a bit of a homer, ignoring a blatant trip and knock ins but other than that a good start

Defence looked good, JoCo doing a lot, Bayliss always beating the first man.
Scrum clearly on top.
Linout been good, BvdL kicking clearances off both feet, and a nice snipe for his try.
A pretty positive first half against a green Glasgow side.

Thought they gave the conversion on the fourth try - though not yet reflected on the scoreboard.
The coverage is... interesting

Don’t understand the thinking of playing a second string side in your last pre season game.
’’Paint the whole world with a rainbow”
All a bit disjointed in the second half with loads of changes but a good run out ahead of the serious stuff from next weekend.
Lots of positives to take in difficult conditions, and there's serious depth to this squad.
I think Jeanes may see quite a few match day squads.
Hooking pecking order will be interesting.
Impressive win but a total mismatch in selections so hard to know what to make of it.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu
Interesting who we’ll see picked as our first XV next week. Did Lawrence play 80 tonight? He looked good but potentially means he might be rested next week? Either way, we’ve got a stack of options!

Bit of a job share with Roux makes sense to me. Keeps Roux fresh and a chance to see what we have with Jeanes. Tough though with Molony, Richards and Hill all hunting minutes too

53-5 full time, 9 tries to one (which came from a blatant hand pulling the ball back in a scrum).

A good run out for us. Glasgow didn’t let their heads drop, so scores had to be worked for.
’’Paint the whole world with a rainbow”
Defence looks more aggressive, Griffin was noticeable against Sale in that regard. And attack appears a bit more structured, sweeping around the corner. Lovely set piece try finished by Lawrence in the second half.
BVDL looks like a great find, really enjoying watching him play.
Overall a good run out and perfect for next week. Quins will be fired up so we’ll have to be at our best for them. A good win could set the tone for our season.
To be fair Glasgow would also have been penalised for various offences including the trip.
Hard to take anything from such a mismatch tbh. I'm still intrigued if Bath/JVG knew Glasgow would field such a weak team or if he expected this to be a proper test before the season started in earnest.

I did enjoy listening to Jiffy's 'brother' on Comms!
Don't understand H, commentary on the stream was Andrew Petrie and George Horne who were very knowledgeable about Bath and it's academy. But Jiffy's brother?

I sometimes wonder if the coaches speak to each other when these pre season games are set up. You'd think it would be reasonable to have a conversation around what each club is looking for to make sure each gets meaningful information / development from the matches.
Quote:hemington
George Horne was decidedly one-eyed and couldn't contain cheering when he thought Glasgow might score. Reminded me of a certain Welsh commentator. I know it was a Warriors stream/cast and I guess that is what to expect. I did find it a tad amusing.
Agree with that, had a sort of 'love in' with Cam Redpath and Josh Bayliss not that surprising!

1. Moving the ball wide with quick hands after two or three pick n goes when a metre or so from their line. Hallelujah! Compared to last year's endless pick n dies
2. Interplay between Finn and Santiago - the chip over the top for Carreras gather and try was great to see
One big thing to work on
BvdL's box kicks. Overall he had a very good game in difficult conditions but his box kicks were way too long and a Prem level counter attack could have been far more dangerous

They must do and maybe they both did. It could well be that Glasgow wanted to put their development kids against tough oppo to see who came through the test and who probably isn't cut out for it (yet at least). Bath on the other hand would have wanted an extended run around together without too much risk of injury etc.

The wind was ridiculous - I thought that he did OK in the circumstances (and considerably better than Glasgow). He is a really exciting 9 and I can see him sharing a lot of the workload with Spencer this year without there being a loss of quality.

Looks like George Furbank was knocked out in the first minute of Quins' friendly on Friday so unlikely to play against us.
Tyrone Green is just as good (stonger runner but less skilled) so won't weaken them IMO.

Wouldn't disagree with any of that. But any quality 9 will judge and adjust to the wind in game which is why I had it down as One Big Thing to Work on

I don’t personally rate Green. Granted I’ve only seen him vs Bath but when he’s played he’s not stood out. I seem to remember right around the time people were making England noise, we played them at The Rec, Mojo playing 10 and pulling him around the backfield with ease. Didn’t look anything special then, and my opinion hasn’t changed.

So that leaves Beno, Kirk and Wheeler with Emmanual on loan to Cardiff.
Yep, one injury away from a real problem.
Don't think any of underestimated the loss of TdT but blimey it would be nice to still have the option to just move him across if that happened.

Agreed, Beno gets injured and the front row just isn’t good enough to compete in the PL let alone Europe.
