Notts march on with victory over Gloucestershire

Rain wiped out the pre-lunch session but Gloucestershire must have known their stay of execution would prove only temporary when play got under way at 1.25pm. They resumed on 91 for five - still 212 runs away from avoiding an innings defeat - and despite Jack Russell's gutsy 45 not out in more than two-and-a-half hours, Notts wrapped up victory before tea on the third day.

Stuart MacGill grabbed four of the wickets to fall to finish with five for 92 as Gloucestershire were dismissed for 219.

Despite facing such an uphill battle, Gloucestershire started in positive mood with Matt Windows hammering the first two balls of the day - bowled by MacGill - for four. With Russell content to play a supporting role, Windows went for his shots but was dismissed for 40 with the total on 120 when he played down the wrong line to seamer Greg Smith and was trapped leg before.

With MacGill finding his rhythm, batting proved difficult and the Test star struck twice in quick succession. Alex Gidman (22) had helped Russell advance the total to 155 before he was bowled after being completely deceived by a well-flighted MacGill delivery. Gloucestershire slipped to 167 for eight when Ian Fisher, who managed only a single, was bamboozled by MacGill and bowled.

Despite MacGill's teasing flight, Russell was looking rock-solid and found an ally in Roger Sillence, adding 52 in a defiant ninth-wicket stand. But when the end came, it came quickly with MacGill applying the coup de grace with two wickets in successive balls.

Sillence, who had made 33 including five fours and a six, was left groping as he was stumped by wicketkeeper Chris Read and then last man Jon Lewis departed first ball trapped leg before.
