Graham Thorpe has informed England he
will be unavailable for the Ashes series.
Thorpe was picked only after convincing the selectors he was in the
right frame of mind to undertake the trip despite his recent marital
problems. But he re-contacted the England management on Monday night to say he
will not be touring after all. Thorpe, who has a chequered recent history with regard to availability
for overseas tours, this summer retired from one-day international cricket
in order to devote more time to his young family. The 33-year-old Surrey left-hander's absence this winter leaves a
middle-order batting spot up for grabs. The move to include Thorpe appeared to have been justified when he
returned to form with Surrey, making 143 in a County Championship match
against Hampshire. But he has now had a change of heart and the ECB will issue a statement
to that effect later on Tuesday.
