Vaughan Named Player Of Year

Michael Vaughan has been voted player of the year by the Professional Cricketers' Association.

The Yorkshire opener was England's outstanding batsmen during the summer - scoring four Test centuries.

In all first-class cricket he made 976 runs from just 15 innings at an average of 75.07.

Vaughan was on a shortlist of five players competing for the accolade, alongside Nick Knight, Ronnie Irani, Matthew Hoggard and Michael Hussey.

Vaughan's highest score of the season was 197, made at the Test match at Trent Bridge against India.

In the first Test series of the summer against Sri Lanka, he made 285 runs at an average of 71.25.

He fared even better against India averaging 102.50 runs and earning the England Player Of The Series Award.

Vaughan also managed to record figures of 4-22 during the NatWest One-day Series with his off spin in a match against the Sri Lankan's at Old Trafford.

Worcestershire's Kabir Ali won the PCA Young Player of the Year award. The other nominations were Jim Troughton, Rikki Clarke, James Anderson and Gordon Muchall.
