England Rally On Second Day

Resuming on 364 for two, Australia looked well set for a total of around 600, but England's bowlers produced a spirited display to silence the home supporters.

They claimed the last eight wickets for 128 runs as Australia were dismissed for 492, Matthew Hayden falling three runs short of a double hundred.

Andrew Caddick finished with 3 for 108, Ashley Giles four for 101 and Craig White 2 for 105.

England's batsmen then rallied superbly reaching 158 for one at the close of play.

Despite losing Michael Vaughan for 33, Marcus Trescothick (63no) teamed up with fellow left-hander Mark Butcher (51no) in a determined unbroken second wicket stand of 109.

Trescothick enjoyed a reprieve in the third over of England's reply, slicing McGrath to Damien Martyn at fourth slip, while Butcher was put down by Hayden in the gully and Adam Gilchrist missed a straightforward stumping off Shane Warne.

England's spirits lifted further when captain Steve Waugh brought himself into the attack late on rather than turn to Jason Gillespie - prompting fears his calf strain had re-occurred having bowled only three overs during England's innings.
