Torn Ligaments For Plagued Silverwood

The Yorkshire fast bowler sustained torn ligaments during a four-over spell in the latter stages of the first day in Perth.

After having a scan on Friday night he was ruled out of the remainder of the Test - leaving England with just four fit specialist bowlers for the remainder of the game.

His fitness will be re-assessed in a week before the England management make a decision about whether to send for another addition to the tour party.

They have already flown out Silverwood as a replacement for Simon Jones, who sustained cruciate ligament damage to his right knee during the opening Test in Brisbane.

Darren Gough has also been sent home having failed to overcome long-standing knee trouble.

"He has a tear on the medial aspect of his left ankle and there are also signs of bony bruising on the other side of the ankle as a direct result of the tear," explained physio Kirk Russell.

"This is a new injury and not related to the joint inflammation he experienced in the same ankle at the end of the English season."

Silverwood added: "To say I'm frustrated is a massive understatement. I've waited a long time to get back into the Test side and really wanted to make an impact in this game - the only consolation for me is that it isn't a recurrence of the problem I had at the end of last season.

"I felt something go in the ankle on impact in the second ball of my second over and I decided to stay on, but the pain just got worse and worse and eventually I had to come off."
