Steve Harmison and Robert
Key have been called up to England's one-day squad for the first time to
compete in the triangular series. Durham fast bowler Harmison and Kent batsman Key were named in a 16-man
squad to take on Australia and Sri Lanka in the series, starting in Sydney
on December 13. Worcestershire fast bowler Kabir Ali is also named in the squad and is
the only uncapped member of the party, while Lancashire all-rounder Andrew
Flintoff has been included despite his injury problems. Harmison's call-up follows his nightmare performance in the limited
overs tour opener in Lilac Hill - when he delivered 16 wides, including
seven in succession during a 15-ball over. Since then he has produced encouraging displays in the Test defeats in
Adelaide and Perth, although he did have troubles with his run-up at the
WACA. Coach Duncan Fletcher explained: "If you look at Vaughan, [playing
one-day matches] opened up his cricket and he's been a lot more positive. "Hopefully it will have the same effect on Harmison and maybe he'll
come in and show a bit more control. "We want to have a look at players like Steve Harmison and Kabir Ali
and we want to see how they cope with bowling in the latter stages of
games during the first half of this one-day tournament." Meanwhile, Chris Silverwood, who sustained a torn ankle ligament in the
third Test at Perth, will fly home in the next few days after being ruled
out of the remaining two Ashes Test matches at Melbourne and Sydney. Those members of the Test squad not included in the one-day party will
remain in Perth to continue work before the Ashes series resumes. The full England squad: N Hussain (Essex, capt), Kabir Ali
(Worcestershire), I Blackwell (Somerset), A Caddick (Somerset), P
Collingwood (Durham), A Flintoff (Lancashire), S Harmison (Durham), R
Irani (Essex), R Key (Kent), J Kirtley (Sussex), N Knight (Warwickshire),
O Shah (Middlesex), J Snape (Leicestershire), A Stewart (Surrey, wkt), M
Trescothick (Somerset), C White (Yorkshire). |
