Mark Butcher
When Mark Butcher broke into the test team in
1997, his performances were inconsistent. He was eventually dropped from
the team, and it seems that this has given him a fresh desire to succeed
at the top level.
Since his return he has increased his batting average from the
mid-twenties to 32.95, with his highest score coming in a fantastic
innings against the Australians in the 2001 Ashes, where he made an
unbeaten 173 to win the match for his side.
As well as his batting, "Butch" also bowls useful medium pace which
England have called upon on several occasions to break a partnership. He
currently has 10 test wickets to his name, at a reasonable average of
slightly over 30.
