England stalwart Alec Stewart is poised to set a new record for England, when he walks out at Lord's tomorrow. The England wicketkeeper/batsman will set a new record of having played 119 test matches for his country, beating the record of 118 set by Graham Gooch.

Stewart To Become Most Capped Player Thursday is an historic day for England's senior campaigner and stalwart Alec Stewart, for on his favourite ground of Lord's, "Stewie" will play his 119th test match for his beloved country, beating the record set by Graham Gooch. The 39 year-old wicketkeeper/batsman was fortunate to regain his place in the England side, having opted not to tour India and New Zealand in the winter of 2001/2002, to spend more time with his family. However, when Jamie Foster was ruled out of this summer's Sri Lanka series, Stewart was recalled and took full advantage of his chance. It now seems almost certain (Stewart has been in fine form with both bat and gloves) that he will have one final stab at bringing the Ashes back to Lord's, when England visit Australia in the winter of 2002/2003. Also, Stewart will be hoping to keep is spot in the England one-day side for the forthcoming World Cup in South Africa.
