Butcher's Knee Surgery "A Failure"

The England batsman had keyhole surgery last month after the final Test against Sri Lanka.

It was hoped it would solve a long-standing problem with the knee and get the left-hander fully fit for the current Test series against India.

However, Butcher said: "The knee is only average, it's still sore.

"The problem I've had for some time is still there and it's a concern.

"The operation I had didn't really find anything and I don't know what the next step is.

"I can play at the moment, but I can't run flat out. I am waiting to hear what the management think should be the next step," Butcher told the Sunday Express.

Butcher's plight adds to England's injury worries. Marcus Trescothick, Darren Gough, Andrew Caddick and Alex Tudor have all missed the first Test at Lord's.
