Trescothick Gives England Fitness Boost

Marcus Trescothick has revealed he is ready to return to action ahead of schedule.

The England vice-captain suffered a multiple fracture of his right thumb on July 17 and was expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks.

But numerous sessions in an oxygen tent have helped his recovery process.

And he hopes to play for Somerset against Lancashire at Blackpool in less than three weeks, and then in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy final.

If that all goes to plan he would be returning in time for the final Test at The Oval, which begins on September 5.

Trescothick, who will wear a lightweight plastic splint on the damaged digit, said: "The cast comes off on Monday and it will have been on for three weeks.

"At that point we will know better when I can play again.

"I'm hoping to come back for the game at Blackpool and then play in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy final - that's my target and we will have to see how it goes.

"The medical suggestion was that I shouldn't play for eight weeks but as long as you feel ready there is no reason why you can't come back.

"It's disappointing because I was playing very well before the injury, I think I was concentrating better than I ever had done before."
