Ben Smith Appointed As New Skipper

Ben Smith has been announced as the new Worcestershire County Cricket Club captain.30 year old Smith has said that he is thrilled at having the chance to lead the County to the pinnacle of the English game.

Smith will take over the captaincy with immediate effect after WCCC legend Graeme Hick was relieved of the duties last week.

In what may seem as a risky move by some,Smith,30,only joined the club 12 months ago from Leicestershire but the board seem confident enough in his ability to lead the County,hopefully,to many trophies.

Smith has plenty of experience however,after twice winning the County Championship when at Grace Road.Speaking to the Official WCCC Site Smith spoke of his joy at being given such an honour. "I am thrilled to have been given the honour of leading the County during what promises to be a very exciting period. I have settled into the Club extremely well both on and off the pitch and am looking forward to building on the progress we made as a side last season."

Bitterness from ex-captain Graeme Hick was also ruled out by the fans favourite as he said "I know Graeme was disappointed not to continue in the job but I have spoken to him and he has assured me I have his full support."

After proving an instant hit with the New Road faithful last season,whilst scoring a superb 1000+ runs in First Class Cricket,Smith was a strong contender for the role ever since Hick was relinquished of the duties. It is believed that after coming so close to promotion and silverware last season it was felt by the club that fresh impetus was needed out on the field and they will no doubt see this announcement as the club moving forward in its everlong quest for honours.
