Morecambe promoted to the Football League

Lincoln City will play Morecambe FC after the Lancashire side came from behind to win the Conference Playoff Final in front of more than 40,000 at Wembley Stadium. it now means that City will face Morecambe for the first time in 7 years next season as the Imps try and win a place in League 1 at the sixth attempt whilst Morecambe will hope to avoid being the first team to be relegated straight back

Exeter started the game well and scored a deserved opener just 7 minutes in from Phillips. Morecambe then started to absolutely dominate the game and won a penalty when Todd fouled Carlton on the way to goal, Wayne Curtis made a message of it though and goalkeeper, Paul Jones, had no problem saving the spot kick and it’s follow up. However, Morecambe did get a more than deserved equaliser a few minutes before half time when Gary Thompson sent a thunderous shot in off the underside of the bar.

The second half was less exciting with neither side managing to have a decent chance on target for a long period of time. Danny Carlton turned the game on it’s head just 8 minutes from time when he ran free of the defence and just like Thompson, he sent a thunderous shot in off the bar. All hope of Exeter getting an equaliser disappeared in added on time when Gill got sent off for Exeter and Morecambe will spend the 2006/7 season in League 2.

The result now means that 23 of the 24 teams for next season are confirmed, with either Bristol Rovers or Shrewsbury to take the 24^th spot depending on who loses the playoff final.
