Lincoln City History : Players C-Dooley

The second part of our Players since the War A-Z sees us cover C and Dooley and there are a few recognisable names such as Glenn Cockerill. There are also a suprising amount of loanees in this category, most of which were highly unsuccessful.

Calland, Ted – The former Torquay, Exeter and Port Vale man played for the Imps 9 times in the 1961/2 season before leaving Sincil Bank.

 

Cameron, Dave – “Soggy” Dave was the human equivalent of lucozade. Dave never gave up and put 100% in every match, however, Dave’s problem was that he wasn’t particularly good, however, the Scot did play 73 times for the Imps between 2000 and 2002 before then playing for Chester and Droylesden.

 

Camm, Mark – Mark was a back up player for the Imps who never really had an extended run in the team but very much like his team-mate, Matt Bloomer, was great back up when you needed him, however, this wasn’t enough and in 3 years at Sincil Bank after joining from Sheffield United in 2000, Mark made just 40 appearances before leaving to play for Kings Lynn.

 

Cammack, Steve – Made 26 appearances in the 1981/2 season and also played for Sheffield Wednesday, Chesterfield and two spells at Scunny.

 

Campbell, David – David was another well travelled player who played 5 games during a loan spell in 1993/4. He also played for Forest, Charlton, Plymouth, Bradford, Rotherham, Burnley, Wigan and Cambridge.

 

Campbell, James – Jame played an impressive 78 games in a 2 year spell at Sincil Bank in the 60s before playing for West Brom and Portsmouth.

 

Capper, Jack – The fact that he made just 23 appearances between 1955 and 1959 says it all about this man’s injury problems, a really classy player when he was fit but those days were few and far between due to several niggling injurys.

 

Carbon, Matt – Matt is one of the few players who has had 2 spells at Sincil Bank. The first came in 1992 when he came through the youth system at Sincil Bank before being sold to Derby towards the end of 1993. He also rejoined the Imps on loan in the 2003/4 season but played just once due to being injured in a 3-0 defeat at Hull. He played 85 games for City in total in a career that also saw him play for West Brom, Walsall and Barnsley.

 

Cargill, David – Another injury prone player who played just 10 times in the 1960/1 season before being released.

 

Carling, Terry – A regular in the first team during his time and the former Leeds, Walsall and Chester man played 99 games for the Imps between 1962 and 1964.

 

Carmichael, Matt – Made 133 appearances for the Imps in a 4 year spell stretching from 1989 to 1993. He also played for Scunny, Preston, Mansfield, Donny and Darlington.

 

Carr, Darren – A less than successful loan signing in the 2000/1 season and he made just 3 appearances. Also played for Bristol Rovers, Newport, Sheffield United, Crewe, Chesterfield, Gillingham and Brighton.

 

Carr, David – David played a huge 199, it may not seem like a lot but he played near enough every single game between 1979 and 1982. He also played for Luton and Torquay.

 

Carruthers, Martin – Martin had been prolific with Scunthorpe and he joined City in a player exchange deal involving Dean West in the 2004/5 season. He played 11 games for the Imps and played very well, however, his inability to score cost him a regular spot and he left the Imps after just 7 months. Also played for Villa, Peterborough, Macclesfield, Cambridge and Grantham.

 

Cartwright, George – Joined the Imps for the 1945 and 1946 season but made just 4 appearances.

 

Cartwright, Phil – A regular in the first team that won the 1931/2 championship.

 

Casey, Paul – Casey joined the Imps in 1987 and was part of the conference winning side before leaving for Boston in 1988 after 59 games for City.

 

Chapman, Darren – 1 appearance wonder back in 1991/2.

 

Chapman, Roy – Roy had 2 separate spells at Sincil Bank, both lasting for 3 years. Between 1957-1960 and 1964-1967, two of years of which, he spent as player manager, he made 186 appearances for City. His managerial record stood at 68 games, 16 wins, 17 draws, 35 defeats. He also played for Villa, Mansfield, Port Vale and Chester in a successful career.

 

Cheetham, Tommy – Tommy signed just after returning from the war and made 57 appearances between 1945-1948.

 

Clark, Derek – Made 4 appearances in the 1951/2 season.

 

Clarke, Allan – A manager who survived just 6 months in the job, managing 15 games, winning 2, drawing 6 and losing 7 at the beginning of the 1990/1 season.

 

Clarke, David – In a 7 year spell at Sincil Bank, beginning in 1987, he made 199 appearances for the club before later playing for Notts County and Doncaster.

 

Clews, Maxie – The former Wolves man made just 7 appearances between 1953 and 1955.

 

Cliff, Eddie – Another less than inspirational loan signing who made 3 appearances in the 1974/5 season. Also played for Burnley, Notts County, Tranmere and Rochdale.

 

Cobb, Billy – In a career that also saw him play for Forest, Plymouth and Brentford, Billy made 73 appearances for City between 1966 and 1968.

 

Cockerill, Glenn – A legend at the club and one of the few to have 2 spells with the club. He initially joined in 1976 before leaving in 1980. However, he returned a year later and stayed for 3 years before leaving in 1984. Played 214 times for the Imps and also played for Swindon, Sheffield United, Southampton, Orient and Fulham in a great career.

 

Coker, Ade – Played 7 games for the Imps in a loan spell in 1974/5.

 

Coleman, Omari – Young striker who joined the Imps in 2005 from Watford but failed to make it into the first team, also played for Aldershot and Woking.

 

Collins, Steve – Having played for Southend and 2 spells at Peterborough, Steve made 30 appearances for City between 1984 and 1986.

 

Commons, Mike – Made just 3 appearances between 1959 and 1961.

 

Cook, Mark – Played 9 times between 1988 and 1990.

 

Cooper, Richard – Between 1985 and 1987, the former Sheffield United and Exeter man made 67 appearances for City.

 

Cooper, Terry – Will go down in history as one of the Imps’ highest ever appearance holders with 296 games for the Imps between 1971 and 1979. Was an integral part to the championship winning side. He also played for Newport, Notts County, Scunnny, Bradford and Rochdale.

 

Copley, Dennis – Another 1 game wonder, this time from the 1946/7 season.

 

Cork, Alan – City loaned Alan from Derby and he played 5 games in the 1977 and 1978. He would go on to play in the Premiership and for Sheffield United, he won the penalty that secured their win over Manchester United on the first ever day of the Premiership. Also played for Wimbledon and Fulham.

 

Cornelly, Chris – Chris signed for the Imps from Ashton United in 2003 and impressed everyone who watched him, however, he got injured in the 2003 playoff final and had to wait 18 months before being free from injury, however, he failed to play for the Imps again and was released in 2005.

 

Corner, Norman – Former Hull and Bradford man who played 51 times between 1967 and 1969.

 

Cornforth, John – Almost got into double figures which is surprising for a loan player. He played for us during the 1989/90 season. He also played for Sunderland, Swansea, Birmingham, Wycombe, Scunny.

 

Cornwall, Luke – A loanee star who was so hyped up that he never stood a chance and was absolutely dreadful in his 5 games for the club in the 2002/3 season.

 

Cort, Carl – Another loanee, this time from Premiership Wimbledon and he played 5 times for the Imps. Also played for Newcastle and Wolves.

 

Costello, Peter – Made 51 appearances for the Imps between 1991 and 1992. Also played for Bradford, Rochdale and Peterborough.

 

Cottam, John – A 1 game loan wonder in the 1972/3 season.

 

Cox, Mark – Played just 3 games in between 1976 and 1978.

 

Coxon, William – Played a disappointing 11 games in between 1957 and 1959 before playing for Norwich and Bournemouth.

 

Creance, Gerard – Another injury plagued player who played just 8 times in between 1979 and 1983.

 

Crombie, Allen – A 1 game wonder from the Conference winning season in 1987/8.

 

Cropper, Dene – In a similar way to David Cameron, Cropper would try all day long but the teenage striker was useless and in his 57 games for the Imps after joining in 2002, he scored just 3 times before leaving for Boston in 2004 and eventually resigning for his original club, Worksop.

 

Crosby, Gary – Played 8 games for City in the 1986/7 season and also played for Forest, Grimsby and Huddersfield.

 

Cross, Graham – Nothing spectacular as he played 19 times in the 1978/9 season.

 

Crouch, Neil – Had a pretty average 7 games on loan during the 1979/80 season.

 

Cryan, Colin – A defender who signed in 2005 from Scarborough, a very confident defender who in a similar way to Simon Weaver or Paul Morgan, does exactly what he needs to do.

 

Cumming, Bobby – The former Grimsby man played 89 games between 1987 and 1990.

 

Cunningham, Tony – Having made 135 appearances between 1979 and 1983, Tony went on to have a fantastic career that saw him play for Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday, Manchester City, Newcastle United, Blackpool, Bury and Bolton.

 

Dagg, Harry – 1 appearance wonder in the 1946/7 season.

 

Daley, Phil – Former Wigan man played 41 games for City between 1994 and 1996.

 

Daniel, Peter – An experienced player who joined City in 1985 and played 52 times before leaving in 1987 after 14 games in charge in a caretaker-manager position, however, he only won 2 of those, drawing 5 and losing 7. He also played for Hull, Wolves, Sunderland and Burnley.

 

Daniels, John – Appeared 20 times for City in the 1946/7 season.

  

Davidson, Roger – The former Arsenal, Portsmouth, Fulham and Aldershot man played 7 times for the Imps in 1971/2.

 

Davies, Alec M – A regular appearance make from the subs bench played 43 times for City between 1945 and 1949.

 

Davis, Darren – He made 119 appearances in 2 spells at Sincil Bank that last between 1988 and 1991 before returning for the 1995/6 season. Also played for Notts County, Maidstone and Scarborough.

 

Daws, Tony - Played for Notts County, Sheffield United, Scunny, Grimsby and Scarborough and sandwiched in between were 54 appearances for the Imps between 1993 and 1996.

 

Dawson, Carl – 1 appearance wonder in the 1950/1 season.

 

Day, Chris – Popular loanee goalkeeper in the 2000/1 season and was brought in to cover an injury to Alan Marriott. He is one of the main reasons that City avoided relegation that season. A great goalkeeper who made 18 impressive appearances for City before returning to his parent club, Watford. He has also played for Crystal Palace, QPR and Watford.

 

Dennis, Tony – A journeyman who made 32 appearances during the anti-climactic 1996/7 season. Also played for Plymouth, Exeter, Cambridge, Chesterfield and Colchester.

 

Dick, Scott – The former Norwich, Cardiff and Scunny man made 10 appearances in the 1966/7 season.

 

Dickins, Matt – Another player who spent 2 spells with the club, accumulating 32 appearances between 1990 to 1992 and for the 1993/4 season. Also played for several big clubs including Sheffield United and Blackburn.

 

Dilsworth, Eddie – Represented the Imps just twice between 1966 and 1969.

 

Dixon, Ben – A product of the youth system who made just 50 appearances between 1991 and 1996 before playing for Blackpool. He was all set to return to Sincil Bank in 2005 but the move fell through and he moved to Lincoln United.

 

Dobson, Paul – Another journeyman who played 14 times for City between 1990 and 1992. Also played for Hartlepool, Torquay, Donny, Scarborough, York, Halifax and Hereford.

 

Docherty, Tom – Spent 1947 to 1950 at Sincil Bank, making just 47 appearances for the club before going on to play for Norwich, Reading and Newport.

 

Dooley, Derek – Even people back in the 1946/7 season didn’t know who he was due to make just 2 very short appearances for the club.
