Lincoln City History : Players Downie-F

Due to lack of space, D has spilled over into here and we down from Mitchell Downie through to the F's. This section is full of successful loanees from James Dudgeon and Kevin Ellison as well as a player who scored more than 30 goals in 2 years and was released for not scoring enough

Downie, Mitchell – An impressive 164 appearances between the 1954 and 1959 saw Downie become a real fan favourite of that era before leaving in a career that also saw him play for Bradford Park Avenue, Bradford and Donny.

 

Drysdale, Brian – Another player who had injury problems after just 24 appearances in 6 seasons between 1959 and 1965. Also played for Hartlepool, Bristol City, Reading and Oxford.

 

Dudfield, Lawrie – A no-thrills journeyman striker who came to the Imps on loan in the 2000/1 season and failed to inspire. He also had spells at Leicester, Chesterfield, Hull, Northampton, Southend and Boston.

 

Dudgeon, James – James has the record for most appearances during a loan period at Sincil Bank, accumulating 25 games whilst on loan from Barnsley in the 2000/1 season. The defender was compared to England legend Terry Butcher and even recreated his blood soaked shirt routine in a match at Kidderminster when he headed a goal despite having a huge cut on his head. A train of a defender who had skill in abundance.

 

Dunkley, Malcolm – Made 11 appearances in the 1988/9 season.

 

Dunphy, Sean – The former Barnsley, Doncaster and Scarborough played 62 games between 1991 and 1994 for the Imps.

 

Dunwell, Peter – Made 14 unimpressive appearances in between 1959 and 1961.

 

Dye, Dean – Played 2 games in the 1995/6 season. Also played for Blackpool, Hull, Crystal Palace, Barnet, Huddersfield and Notts County.

 

Dykes, Darren – When you want a striker who changes the game then Darren Dykes defiantly isn’t your man. An awful striker who played 3 games on loan from Swindon during the 2002/3 season.

 

Dykes, Don – He was at Sincil Bank for 10 years, earning himself a testimonial despite only played 101 games for the Imps.

 

Eastham, George – Another journeyman who made 27 appearances for the Imps between 1948 and 1950. He also played for Bolton, Brentford, Blackpool, Swansea and Rochdale.

 

Eden, George – George made just 5 appearances between 1977 and 1979.

 

Edwards, Roy – 6 appearanecs between 1947 and 1949.

 

Ellis, Keith – A midfield schemer who played just 8 times in the 1965/6 season, also played for Sheffield Wednesday, Scunny and Watford.

 

Ellis, Sam – Ellis has two separate spells at City, one as player and one as manager. In his playing career, he made 194 appearances for City during the club’s highly successful spell between 1973 and 1977. In his managerial spell, he rejoined in May 1994 and managed 47 games before leaving in October 1995. His record was played 47, won 16, drawn 12 and lost 19.

 

Ellison, Kevin – Arguably the best loan deal that the club has ever had, a great midfielder who was on loan from Stockport in the 2003/4 season. His distribution was fantastic and he turned out faltering season around and thanks to his contribution, we made the playoffs. After his 11 games for City, he rejected the chance to permanently join City and joined Chester. He has also played for Leicester and Hull.

 

Emery, Tony – Tony is another legend at the club, ammasing a huge 424 appearances for the club between 1945 and 1959 and he held the appearance record for 43 years until Grant Brown broke it, however, Emery’s place in the hall of fame is guaranteed.

  

Eustace, Scott – From a former record appearance holder to a one appearance wonder. Eustace played 1 game for City in the 2000/1 season and also played for Leicester, Mansfield and Cambridge.

 

Evans, Clive – Was part of the conference winning side after joining in 1987 and made 95 appearances before leaving in 1989. Also played for Tranmere, Wigan, Crewe and Stockport.

 

Farmer, Mick – A versatile player who played 23 games for the Imps in the 1965/6 season.

 

Farrall, Alec – The experienced defender made 23 appearances for City in the 1965/6 season. He also played for Everton, Preston, Gillingham and Watford.

 

Fashanu, John – “Fash” was a highly controversial striker in a high profile career that also saw him played for Norwich, Millwall, Wimbledon and Aston Villa. The tall man who would later go on to host numerous TV shows joined the Imps in 1983 and played 36 games for the club before leaving in 1985.

 

Fawell, Derek – The former Notts County man made 3 unremarkable appearances in the 1965/6 season.

 

Fellgate, David – One of the club’s highest appearances holders with a very respectable 233 games between 1980 and 1985, playing almost every single game in that time. He would also played for Grimsby, Bolton, Chester and Wigan.

 

Fell, Jimmy – Jimmy played 70 times for the Imps between 1963 and 1966. He also played for Grimsby, Everton, Newcastle and Wigan.

 

Fencott, Ken – The former Aston Villa man made 76 appearances for the Imps between 1964 and 1966.

 

Fern, George – George made 33 appearances for City in the 1998/9 season.

 

Finch, Roy – Another player who played the vast majority of his career for the Imps, he tallied up 291 appearances for City between 1948 and 1959 before leaving for West Brom.

 

Finney, Kevin – The former Port Vale made played 47 times for the Imps between 1991 and 1993.

 

Finnigan, John – A highly skilful midfielder who initially joined the Imps on loan in the 1997/8 promotion winning season from Nottingham Forest. He soon made the move permanent before leaving in the 2001/2 season. He made 166 appearances for the Imps before leaving for Cheltenham, just 6 days before Cheltenham visited Sincil Bank.

 

Fitzsimmons, Arthur – Made 7 rather unremarkable appearances in the 1958/9 season.

 

Flash, Richard – Came on loan during the 1997/8 season and played 5 times.

 

Fleming, John – Fleming joined the Imps after City won promotion in 1976 and played 128 times before leaving in 1980.

 

Fleming, Neil – 1 apperance wonder in the 1973/4 season.

 

Fleming, Terry – A popular defender in his day, the much travelled man spent 5 years at Sincil Bank. He joined in 1995 and made 210 times before leaving in 2000. He also played for Coventry, Northampton, Preston, Plymouth, Cambridge and Grimsby.

 

Fletcher, Gary – “Fletch” joined the Imps in 2003 and was a little known quantity but soon went on to become the Imps’ most consistent striker over 2 seasons before manager Keith Alexander decided to release him for daring to score more than 15 goals in a season. In the 2004/5 season, he become Gary Taylor-Fletcher when inheriting his wife’s name, however, the reason he’s listed as Gary Fletcher is because that’s the name he used when signing for us.

 

Fletcher, Rod – Rod played 94 times between 1967 and 1971 and also played for Crewe, Scunny and Grimsby.

 

Flitcroft, David – A loan midfielder in the 1993/4 who made just 3 appearances. He has stayed in the Lancashire/Cheshire area all his career and played for Preston, Chester, Rochdale and Bury.

 

Foley, Steve – Another journeyman who played 21 appearances in the 1994/5 season. He also played for Sheffield United, Rotherham, Wycombe, Peterborough, Oldham, Crewe and Bristol Rovers.

 

Folkes, Peter – A defender who manager, Keith Alexander was delighted to sign in 2004 and Keith showed exactly how much he valued Folkes and the young player never played a minute for City before leaving in 2005.

 

Ford, Clive – Played 54 times for City between 1966 and 1968/

 

Fortune-West, Leo – Leo joined the Imps in 1998/9 and played 11 games before leaving. He has also played Gillingham, Orient, Rotherham, Brentford, Carlisle and Doncaster.

 

Foster, Luke – The impressive talent signed from Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and although he didn’t get a regular first team place at first, he established himself in the first team around the Christmas mark.

 

Fox, Kevin – Made just 5 appearances between 1979 and 1981.

 

Franklin, Neil – Made just 22 appearances for City in this 3 years at Sincil Bank between 1986 and 1989.

 

Franks, Albert – Franks was a regular in the first team between 1961 and 1963, making 66 appearances in that time.

 

Frecklington, Lee – The youngster came through the youth team and onto the fringes of the first team but it is highly unlikely that he will ever be a regular in the first team.

 

Freeman, Percy – Another player who has had 2 spells at the club. The first was between 1970 and 1972 and the second was between 1974 and 1976. He played 166 games for the Imps in those two spells.

 

Futcher, Ben – A giant of a defender signed in 2002 from Doncaster Rovers. He played 137 appearances and the high point was scoring City’s first goal in the 2002/3 playoff final. He left in 2005 to join Boston.
