Lincoln City History : Players H

There have been a lot of players with H surnames since the War including the well known ones of Huckerby and Hubbard. Surprisingly, there are very few one appearances wonders in this section but there is a keeper who had 2 loan spells at City and one player, who had 3 spells at 2 different clubs

Hails, Billy – Managed just 9 appearances between 1953 and 1955 before playing for Peterborough, Northampton and Luton.

 

Haines, Keith – A player with a big reputation failed to impress and made just 14 appearances between 1960 and 1963.

 

Hall, Allan – Another legend for the Imps and in 1931/2, he set a goal scoring record for the Imps, scoring a huge 42 goals.

 

Hamilton, Ian – Another journey man who joined the Imps to link up with manager Alan Buckley for a 3rd time in his career. He made 29 appearances for the Imps but scored just 1 goal which came in an FA Cup tie at Leyton Orient. He was often used as a scapegoat and left via a severance package in the 2002/3 season.

 

Hanlon, Ritchie – An underrated and underused midfielder who joined the Imps from Stevenage in 2004/5. He had a brilliant touch and it was obvious why he had won this division before with Rushden and Diamonds. A great reader of the game but never really had a fair crack of the whip at Sincil Bank and left in 2005.

 

Hannah, George – The former Newcastle, Man City, Notts County and Bradford man made 39 appearances for City between 1957 and 1959

 

Harbertson, Ron – Another player who had 2 spells at Sincil Bank. The first was between 1957 and 1960 and the second during 1961. During those 2 spells, he played 92 times for City and also played for Bradford, Grimsby, Darlo, Wrexham and Darlington.

 

Harding, Alan – A man who was vital in the 1975/6 season, Harding made an excellent 277 appearances for the club between 1972 and 1978 and later went on to play for Darlington and Hartlepool.

 

Hardy, Jack – Was in the team that came back from the Second World War and made 22 appearances between leaving in 1948.

 

Harford, Mick – A true club legend despite only playing 120 times for the Imps between 1977 and 1981 and he went on to play for Newcastle United, Bristol City, Birmingham, Luton (Twice), Derby, Chelsea, Sunderland, Coventry and Milton Keynes. Would later manage Nottingham Forest and Rotherham.

 

Harford, Ray – Another Harford who was regarded as a great player. Ray made 182 appearances for City between 1967 and 1971. He also played for Charlton, Exeter, Mansfield, Port Vale and Colchester.

 

Harris, Jason – Was a loanee in the 1997/8 season and made an unimpactful single appearance. However, he has had a good career that’s seen him play from Crystal Palace, Bristol Rovers, Orient, Preston, Hull and Southend.

 

Harrison, Frank – One game wonder from 1985/6.

 

Harrison, John – Made 5 appearances in the 1969/9 season.

 

Hartfield, Charlie – Another loanee who played 3 times for City in 1998/9.

 

Hawkings, Barry – Made more appearances than the previous 4 players put together, but not by much, Barry made 16 appearances for City between 1955 and 1957.

 

Hawksby, John – The former Leeds and York man players 73 times for City between 1964 and 1966.

 

Hawksworth, Derek – Played 38 times for City between 1959 and 1961.

 

Heath, Bill – Made 88 appearances between 1958 and 1961 for City.

 

Heath, Seamus – Another loanee who made 7 appearances in 1982/3, not bad for the former Wrexham and Tranmere man.

 

Heath, Terry – Made a meagre 18 appearances for the Imps between 1972 and 1974/ He also played for Leicester, Hull and Scunthorpe.

 

Hebberd, Trevor – A journeyman who made 33 appearances for the Imps in the 1994/5 season. He also played for Southampton, Bolton, Leicester, Oxford, Derby, Port Vale and Chesterfield.

 

Hellings, Dan – Made just 3 appearances in the 1946/7 season.

 

Helliwell, David – The former Blackburn, Workington and Rochdale man made just 13 appearances for City in the 1969/70 season.

 

Henry, Anthony – Henry was a controversial young defender who went on loan to Northwich Victoria during his time at the Imps, whilst there, he refused to play in a man and Victoria’s manager, Keith Alexander sent him back and he was released at the end of the 2000/1 season after making just 21 appearances since joining in 1999.

 

Heward, Brian – Joined the Imps in 1961 and made 114 appearances before leaving in 1966. Also played for Scunny.

 

Hewitt, Ron – Made just 3 appearances for the Imps in the 1948/9 season.

 

Hibberd Stuard – Stuard (not Stewart or Stuart) had a rather average time at Sincil Bank and made 42 appearances in 3 season between 1980 and 1983.

 

Hill, David – The man who had 2 spells with Scunny, played 73 times for the Imps between 1993 and 1995. He also played for Ipswich and Chester.

 

Hill, Ken – The former Gillingham man made just 2 appearances for City in the 1974/5 season.

 

Hirst, Lee – A loanee from the 1993/4 season who played 9 times for the Imps.

 

Hobson, Gordon – Another club legend and another who had 2 spells at the club. He initially joined the Imps in 1977 before leaving in 1985 and then returning in 1988 and finally retiring in 1990. In his time, he made a huge 372 appearances for City and not many men will ever pass that. He also played for Grimsby, Southampton, Exeter and Walsall.

 

Hodson, Simeon – Another journeyman who made 64 appearances for the Imps between 1985 and 1987. He also played for Notts County, Charlton, Newport, West Brom, Donny, Mansfield.

 

Holder, Alan – Another one appearance wonder and that one match came in the 1955/6 season.

 

Holmes, Roger – The longest serving goalkeeper in the club’s history, spent more than 12 years at Sincil Bank between 1959 and 1971. He made 305 appearances for City before eventually retiring.

 

Holmes, Steve – A defender with an eye for goal and one of the few defenders to ever end a season as the top goalscorer. Steve made an impressive 230 appearances between 1995 and 2002 and was a real fan favourite. However, injury in the 2001/2 season forced him to retire from professional football. He also played for Preston and Hartlepool.

 

Hone, Mark – A quiet midfielder who managed 66 appearances between 1996 and 1998.

 

Hood, Derek – A loanee who made 9 appearances in the 1986/7 season.

 

Horrigan, Darren – A young goalkeeper who came through the youth system but never had a chance of regular first team football and was always 3rd choice keeper between 2000 and 2003. His one appearance for the club came in the 2001/2 season when Alan Marriott was injured in the first half and Horrigan took over in the second half and he didn’t concede.

 

Houghton, HB – A regular first teamer who made 61 appearances for the Imps between 1963 and 1965. He also played for Bradford Park Avenue, Birmingham, Southend and Oxford.

 

Houghton, Keith – Made 32 appearances in the 1983/4 season.

 

Hoult, Alan – A loanee from the 1977/8 season who made just 2 appearances.

 

Hoult, Russell – Very few players ever go out on loan to another club and even fewer go on loan to the same club twice but that’s what Russell Hoult did. In a career that’s seen him play in the Premiership, he played 19 games for the Imps in the 1991/2 and the 1994/5 seasons. The popular goalkeeper has also played for Leicester, Bolton, Derby, Portsmouth, West Brom and Nottingham Forest.

 

Hubbard, Phil – Another player who had 2 spells at the club and between 1965 and 1971, as well as 1976 to 1979, Hubbard made 282 appearances for the Imps.

 

Huckerby, Darren – Many argue that Huckerby is the great player to emerge out of Lincoln’s youth system and after playing 31 games between 1993 and 1996, “Hucks” was sold to Newcastle United. His career has also seen him play for Millwall, Coventry, Leeds, Man City, Forest and Norwich

 

Hudson, Geoff – Another journeyman who played 36 times for City in the 1965/6 season. He also played for Bradford Park Avenue, Bradford City, Halifax, Exeter, Crewe and Gillingham.

 

Hughes, David – Spent 4 years at Sincil Bank between 1977 and 1981 but made just 63 appearances for the Imps.

 

Hughes, Gordon – The former Newcastle and Derby man made 131 appearances for City between 1967 and 1971.

 

Hughes, Jeff – An exciting prospect that joined the Imps in the 2005/6 season from Larne. He was highly rated in Northern Ireland and after some initial mistakes, established himself as a first team regular.

 

Hulme, Eric – The former Forest man made 25 appearances for City in between 1972 and 1974.

 

Hulme, Kevin – Another journeyman who made just 6 appearances for City in the 1995/6 season. He also had 2 spells at Bury as well at spending time at Chester, Doncaster, Halifax and York

 

Humphries, Glenn – A loanee that made just 9 appearances for City in the 1986 and 1987.

 

Hunter, George – A one appearance wonder in the 1965/6 season and he was defiantly better known for successful spells at Derby, Exeter and Darlington.

 

Hunter, Les – Played 2 times for the Imps in the 1987/8 season, however, he is the only player in the history of football to have 3 spells at 2 separate clubs, Scunthorpe and Chesterfield.

 

Hutchingson, Barry – Hutchingson made 27 appearances for City in the 1965/66 season and also played for Chesterfield, Derby, Blackburn and Bradford.

 

Hutchingson, Jimmy – Joined the Imps in 1946 and made 91 appearances before leaving in 1949.
