McCombe on the way out?

Imps Player of the Season, Jamie McCombe could soon be heading out of Sincil Bank after the Imps accepted a transfer bid. Next season, Crewe will be in League 1 but chances are that McCombe will join then them after they met a minimum fee release clause in his contract.

McCombe had a great 2005/6 season and scored a fair few vital goals and deservedly won and then kept the captain's armband are Paul Morgan got injured. However, the former Scunthorpe man could have played his last game for the Imps in the 2-1 defeat at Grimsby last week. Speaking to the Echo, Imps' chairman Steff Wright revealed the Imps have been forced into accepting a transfer bid because it meets a clause in Jamie's contract. Wright told the Echo,

"We have given Crewe permission to speak to Jamie, they are willing to meet the release fee in his contract and it's now down to him what he decides to do. But we desperately want him to remain with us and we have offered him a new deal to keep him at the club. He's chosen to wait and it's now up to him where he thinks he is best off. It's disappointing because he was outstanding for us last season and we want to keep our best players."

Whether McCombe would be willing to move or not is another matter all together though. Many sources say that he is happy at Sincil Bank and although being a league above the Imps, a move to Crewe (with all due respect) wouldn't be much of a step up. Dario Gradi's men only avoided relegation last season with a last day win over Coventry but finally went down this season and are early favourites for a relegation struggle next season.
