Surrey suffer rare defeat

The 22-year-old was out for 50 with only two runs needed while trying to finish the game off in style, after Surrey had thrown away a flying start to set a target of just 190 all out. Jason Kerr, who finished unbeaten on 34 to add to his three for 27 with the ball, scored the winning boundary with more than five overs left to see Derbyshire to victory.

After the hosts had won the toss and elected to bat, openers Ian Ward and Ally Brown got off to a good start before the latter was trapped lbw for 19 by Dominic Cork. The 50 came up in the seventh over but gradually the pressure told and Ward will have been disappointed to be second man out for 31, caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Karl Krikken off Cork.

Scott Newman was given his chance to bat up the order, but looked nervous in scratching round for 26 balls before Krikken's catch off Tom Lungley put him out of his misery.

After his disastrous early spell, Dean was brought back on. Wicketkeeper Krikken decided to stand up to his brisk medium pace to prevent the Surrey batsmen from getting forward and the plan worked a treat as Alec Stewart was stumped for 11.

After Nadeem Shahid had been bowled by Kerr for one, the hosts were struggling at 107 for five when skipper Adam Hollioake came to the wicket to join Ramprakash. The experienced pair put on 41 for the sixth wicket, but just as they looked set to post a respectable total, Mathew Dowman bowled Hollioake for 21 in the 36th over before repeating the trick to dismiss Ian Salisbury for two in his next over.

Kerr then bowled Martin Bicknell (two) and Tim Murtagh (eight) to leave Ramprakash to make the most of the last two overs with only last man Ed Giddins for company. He smacked the first ball of the last over, bowled by Lungley, for a huge six, but was caught on the boundary by Stephen Stubbings trying to repeat the feat three balls later.

With a small total to defend, it was important the home attack made a swift breakthrough, and Bicknell did just that in the third over, taking the prize scalp of Aussie Michael di Venuto for five, caught at square leg by Ramprakash.

Not to be outdone, Giddins bowled the other Derbyshire opener, Chris Bassano, for 19, and Stubbings was lucky not to follow him back as he was dropped by Stewart and Ramprakash in successive overs. Stubbings' luck finally ran out two overs later when he had scored 26, Stewart this time holding a catch off Murtagh's bowling.

With less than four an over required Cork did not need to try anything spectacular, but still managed to throw away his wicket after scoring 32, chipping a half-volley from Murtagh straight to Brown at mid-wicket.

New batsman Dowman's poor limited-overs season continued when Salisbury spun one past him having scored two as he advanced down the wicket, allowing Stewart a simple stumping chance. However, Selwood batted with maturity beyond his years in his 60-ball innings and Kerr provided fine support to ensure victory.
