Derbyshire v Durham - day two report

A fine batting display from Nicky Peng and impressive bowling from Paul Collingwood put Durham in a winning position against Derbyshire after the second day of their Frizzell County Championship Second Division match.

England Under-19 batsman Peng almost single-handedly hauled the visitors back into the game as he hit a career-best total of 108, while Collingwood took three for 26 and two catches. Play ended with Derbyshire on 190 for nine in their second innings.

Peng smashed five fours in one over off the bowling of first-class debutant Ali Bukhari, as the visitors ended their first innings five short of Derbyshire's 263 first-innings total. A ninth-wicket partnership of 73 between Peng and Mark Davies also helped. They were reduced to 181 for eight, as Paul Collingwood added just two to his overnight 40, and five other wickets fell for 97 runs.

Dominic Cork continued his impressive display as he followed his 56 runs on the first day by claiming a five-wicket haul. It included the valuable wicket of Peng as he forced the youngster to edge the ball to Andrew Gait.

Following Peng's dismissal, Durham added just four more runs before tailender Steve Harmison was caught by Karl Krikken, becoming Cork's fifth victim as he finished with five for 72.

Durham were below-par in the morning session, with Peng running out of partners as the middle-order fell rapidly. Gordon Muchall failed to score off 22 balls before falling to Kevin Dean, while Andrew Pratt had only managed 18 when clean-bowled by Bukhari.

Derbyshire got off to the worst possible start when play resumed, with Stephen Stubbings an early casualty, caught by Martin Love for four. Michael di Venuto fell four short of his half-century. Collingwood then began a devastating spell of bowling, taking Dominic Hewson for seven, Luke Sutton for eight, and Cork for just two.

Gait finally succumbed to Neil Killeen as he was clean-bowled for 35, and Krikken was out lbw to Davies. Durham continued to exert pressure on the Derbyshire batsmen with more success, as Jason Kerr and Bukhari both fell to Harmison to leave the visitors in a healthy position.
