Notts romp to emphatic Benson & Hedges win

Nottinghamshire beat Derbyshire by ten wickets in a Benson & Hedges Cup game reduced to 10 overs a side.

Three wickets in five balls from left-armer Greg Smith helped reduce Derbyshire to 72 for seven. And Chris Read and Lance Klusener eased to the winning total with 10 balls to spare. Read struck 35 off 23 balls including six fours while Klusener smashed a typical 39 off 27 balls featuring three fours and two sixes.

Earlier after repeated inspections following overnight and morning rain, the visitors were put in after Jason Gallian won the toss for Notts. Steve Stubbings and Michael Di Venuto set about the Notts attack with some urgency from the first ball. The Australian picked up a massive hooked six, but eventually he holed out to Kevin Pietersen off the bowling of Gareth Clough for a quickfire 30.

Dominic Cork came in and signalled his intentions with a first ball cover drive to the boundary but Stubbings (26) soon departed after an ill-timed lift to Clough off Lance Klusener.

South African-born Smith then completed a tremendous ninth over, comprehensively bowling Cork (eight), Dominic Hewson (nought) and Mohammad Ali (nought) within the space of five balls as Derbyshire crumbled.

Smith finished with three for eight off his maximum two overs before Jason Kerr went for another duck and Steve Selwood was caught off Harris from the last ball of the innings.
