Shock recalls for Cork and Crawley

England have given shock recalls to Dominic Cork and John Crawley for the opening Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's. Cork is recalled for the first time since playing at Lord's against Australia a year ago.

Crawley is brought back unexpectedly following an acrimonious but successful move from Lancashire to Hampshire during the winter. He could make his first international appearance since the final Test against Australia at Sydney in January 1999. They join Alec Stewart, who replaces injured wicketkeeper James Foster, and Alex Tudor in a new-look 13-man squad for the opening match in the three-Test series. While both Stewart and Tudor, who will battle with Cork for an opportunity to replace Darren Gough as he recovers from a knee injury, were predicted recalls, England were expected to call upon members of last year's Academy intake in Adelaide. Warwickshire batsman Ian Bell, who turned 20 just last month, was widely tipped to be named in the squad for the first time after flying out to New Zealand as cover for injuries earlier this year. Instead, the selectors have decided to give Crawley another chance, while Cork returns to the ground where he has tasted most of his success for England.
