Cork desperate to seize England chance

Dominic Cork teams up with the England squad at Lord's determined to take advantage of his unexpected opportunity to claim a World Cup place.
| The Derbyshire all-rounder received the call from chairman of selectors David Graveney to join the squad preparing for Saturday's NatWest Series final against India as a replacement for James Kirtley. The Sussex seamer broke his hand training at Old Trafford last weekend and is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks. It brought an unexpected recall for Cork, who featured in the corresponding series last summer only to overlooked for younger alternatives like Paul Collingwood after England lost all six matches against Pakistan and Australia. But with the World Cup in South Africa just seven months away, Cork is hoping he can now stay in England's plans and forge a place in their vibrant one-day line-up, in a similar manner to Ronnie Irani has also made the most of his chance this summer. "Hopefully I can stay involved this time," said Cork. "When I played last summer I didn't think I did that badly but at the same time I didn't do as well as I had hoped. "It's a good time to be called up because sometime in the near future the selectors are going to have to make their minds up about what sort of squad they want for the World Cup and take it to Sri Lanka for the ICC tournament and to Australia for the one-dayers there. "If I can make an impression before then, hopefully I can be a part of all that. It's been difficult to keep track of England's performances in this series because of my commitment with Derbyshire, but from what I've seen they look like an exciting side."
