Durham record first win at Derbyshire's expense

Off-spinner Nicky Phillips took three for nought from four overs and Steve Harmison weighed in with three wickets as Durham bowled the visitors out for 209 in their second innings.

Despite Durham being skittled for 203 themselves, Derbyshire's collapse to 96 all out in their first innings proved all-important in a low-scoring affair. Set 299 to win, the visitors made a bright start with Steve Stubbings and Michael Di Venuto putting on 58 for the first wicket.

Di Venuto raced to 40 from just 50 balls but his explosive knock came to an end when he stayed back to Harmison, offering a routine catch to wicketkeeper Andrew Pratt. Then Harmison's pace did for Andrew Gait, who edged to Pratt for a fourth-ball duck.

Stubbings was intent on playing the anchor role, and he added 53 for the third wicket with Chris Bassano before being trapped lbw by Mark Davies for 30. Bassano fell one short of his half-century when pinned in front by medium-pacer Marc Symington, and Tom Lungley, dropped in the gully by Graeme Bridge, made 20 before being bowled by a beauty from Harmison.

After Dominic Hewson (18) was lbw to slow left-armer Bridge, Nicky Phillips then went on to take three wickets in seven balls. Nicky Peng took bat-pad catches to remove Karl Krikken (one) and Mohammad Ali (nought), and Andrew Pratt held on to an attempted sweep by Graeme Welch (44).

The home side's first win was secured when Bridge caught and bowled Kevin Dean for two.

Durham began the day looking to extend their lead as far as possible, but Dean made sure they enjoyed little success, taking all of the last four wickets to fall. Resuming on 169 for six, Durham managed to add just 34 more runs as their tail collapsed in the face of some fiery pace bowling.
