Cork claims 50th victim as Notts toil

Dominic Cork picked up his 50th first-class wicket of the season as Derbyshire seized control of the County Championship Division Two clash with Nottinghamshire. Cork achieved the feat when he had Notts skipper Jason Gallian adjudged leg before in their first innings.
| Notts never really recovered from that wicket and slumped to 182 for eight at the close of play, although Kevin Pietersen is unbeaten on 72. Resuming on 324 for seven, Derbyshire lost a wicket off the second ball of the day when Graeme Welch edged an Andrew Harris delivery into the safe gloves of wicketkeeper Chris Read. Mohammad Ali continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over with some aggressive shots before Harris claimed his second victim of the day. The dismissal brought Lian Wharton to the crease but he did not hang around for very long before Gregory Smith wrapped up the innings with a straight ball which sneaked through. Gallian showed his intentions with a well-executed cut shot to backward point early in Notts' reply. But Cork, who was named in the England squad for next week's first Test against India at Lord's, accounted for the former Lancashire star two balls later with a leg before decision. Gallian shuffled across his wicket and Cork fired a quick, straight delivery into his pads. Paul Johnson replaced his skipper in the middle but scored just six from 13 balls when he was also adjudged leg before, this time to Kevin Dean. Opener Guy Welton also failed with the bat when he edged a delivery from Ali and Karl Krikken took a comfortable catch behind the stumps. But then Pietersen and England hopeful Usman Afzaal steadied the ship with some determined batting. Pietersen played a delightful late cut shot to the third man region in the 25th over, then Afzaal superbly timed an attempted yorker from Welch to the fence. The pair had put on 99 for the fourth wicket when Afzaal (58) inside edged the ball onto his stumps. The dangerous Nicky Boje and Read both fell to successive Cork deliveries soon after. England Academy member Paul Franks added just one to the total before he was caught by Michael Di Venuto off the bowling of Matthew Dowman, who also accounted for Richard Logan for a duck.
