Turd of the Month Awards - Winter Break
By Andy Strouthous
October 26 2004
Arsenal Times today announced its prestigious Turd Of the Month Award and although its only the 8th of October there are two nominees already. Senor Shit Aragones as he likes to be called needs no further introduction from this blog.
But Mihir Bose of the Telegraph is also worthy of nomination, this journalist works hard to create a picture of a failing, and crisis ridden, Arsenal that is poorly supported. Thus according to Bose Manure are oversubscribed by 9000 would be ticket purchasers every game, meanwhile Arsenal struggle to sell theirs, and have had to put tickets on general sale for the last 4 games.
Now perhaps he is just ignorant rather than malicious, although I suspect the latter, the fact is tickets were put on sale to Red Members. Red Members rarely get a chance to buy tickets, but about 3 times a year when silver members go on holiday they get that rare chance. That is not a general sale but selling to Arsenal's 80,000 members. Of course he fails to mention the 80,000 members.
I don't know which four games he was referring to, but the Charlton match was sold out at least three weeks before it was played.
This might seem pendantic but Mihir Bose has an agenda and that is to destroy confidence in the Arsenal by slagging off its fan base.
Send in your nomination for TURD OF THE MONTH
WINTER BREAK MY ARSE
We have already tolerated almost a month of interruption to the premiership - its all stop go, and start again. Players return exhausted after long flights, meanwhile we have to put up with twittering on about who should play up front. Personally I couldn't give a shite, lets get back to playing once a week A winter break would just mean more meaningless internationals, more exhausted players, and boring fortnights with no real competition. Winter is dreary enough without longterm football breaks. A winter break would mean more midweek games to get through the fixture list and probably have to go on to the end of May as well. Its a self defeating nonsense. Here is a better idea - abolish international football and have a World Cup of Football clubs every year at the end of the season. No sooner will our players be back than they will have to play two league games and another in Europe within 8 days. Two of those games will be away, of course the rhythm of the team will be undermined and probably fitful for a game or two. Is it really worth it?
