Early days of Autumn

I’ve waited a few days before writing this.  Sometimes it’s better to allow thoughts to gestate. Tuesday night’s game against Rotherham still represents a major improvement in the way we are playing. The result could be very important for us by the end of the season. 

For me there was one key difference against Rotherham. We passed the ball.  It was so much better than watching the hoof ball we have experienced of the last few seasons. At times the distribution was excellent. Accurate passes, movement into space, not quite like watching Brazil but definitely not like watching a recent Rovers team. Credit where it’s due too, Rotherham played some good football, particularly in the 2nd half. Neither team resorted to hoof ball. Despite the referee.

We now have Oldham on Saturday and then two long distance trips to Gillingham and Exeter. Oldham have not been great on the road. They dropped points away at Fleetwood and at Colchester.  Like us they are unbeaten in the League. They also have a Tranmere old boys management team and a number of our former players in the squad. It will be interesting to see how Nevitt performs on his return to the Prenton Park. In the last game Jordan Turnbull kept Mullin under control, arguably a more prolific player, it will be interesting to see what happens on Saturday.

We now have a much larger squad. The two deadline day signings from Peterborough add a bit more depth, and it will be interesting to see what happens to the back line with Bobby Faulkner suspended. The boss has suggested that he will pick teams based upon who we’re playing rather than stick with the same starting XI. 

It’s still way too soon to be getting overly optimistic or unduly pessimistic. We will have a much better idea about the direction we are headed after our home game against Walsall. At the moment we just need to enjoy the novelty of looking forward to seeing us. Long may it continue.
