ADAMS U-TURN ANGERS TYKE'S FANS

Chris Adams has decided to stay at Sussex in a move that has incensed Yorkshire fans. Adams has decided that the combined management and player role was too much at this stage of his career.

Yorkshire chief executive Stewart Regan said "We are shell-shocked by his decision to remain with Sussex. We offered him the chance to carry on with his playing career whilst providing the opportunity he desired to move into a managerial role. It is a big job, that is true, but Chris and our board felt that it was a challenge he was up to and it is very disappointing that he will now not be coming to Headingley Carnegie."

Adams met with the Yorkshire team and made his decision only hours later which has left fans speculating about what was said to result in Adams' change of heart. Yorkshire fans had been excited by the appointment of the Sussex skipper, who's experience and excellent cv was considered the dawn of a new era for a club with a recent history of internal wranglings and disaffected players.

David Byas was recently relieved of coaching responsibilties with the Yorkshire first team and is still considering an alternative role as director of cricket development. It would take a major change of heart on behalf of the Yorkshire Management Board to reappoint him in his previous role - if indeed Byas would accept that offer. With Anthony McGrath still considering his future this latest development could be catastrophic.

Sussex are said to be 'understandably jubilant' but Yorkshire fans have been asking just how much influence Sussex have had on his decision. One Yorkshire supporter asked "have Sussex promised him a management job there in two years time when he retires as a player and therefore won't have to move or combined two jobs in the short-term?"

The news comes on the eve of the fixtures for 2007 being published.
