THE DIRECTOR RUMOUR MILL CONTINUES TO TURN

The closing date for applications was 21 January. Ever since the rumours of impending appointments have grown dailly. Names such as Wayne Clark, Tom Moody and Allan Donald have all been tipped as Headingley bound. News today has once more added the name of Darren Gough to the equation.

Gough is yet to signed the contract Essex offered him at the end of the 2006 season.

Speaking to Cricinfo Essex's chief executive David East said: "Darren Gough continues to indicate his intentions to play for Essex in 2007. It is true he has not signed a new contract yet, but he will return from Australia soon and we expect it to be finalised then."

Gough has previously denied stories linking him with a return to Yorkshire, but with the county currently sifting through application forms it is possible that he may be waiting for news on whether his own application has been successful.

Speculation had mounted that Gough may even be considering retirement. Lucrative routes away from the game have been offered his way, including TV work. Gough's spokeswoman said: "There's no question of him retiring. When he comes back from Australia it will be sorted."
