Likely to be missing on England duty for most of the
summer, but welcome back whenever he can make it. Some early season wickets in a
Yorkshire shirt wouldn't do any harm before he batters the Windies and the
Indians!
Hoggy describes himself as the 'Ever Ready
bunny' because he bowls all day and never gives up the fight. He has become one
of the first names on the England Test teamsheet over recent seasons. Matthew is
a captains dream, willing to bowl from any end in any conditions. His accuracy
and ability to swing the ball (particularly into left handers
pads) made him a potent early weapon against the Australians in
England's successful 2005 Ashes campaign.
Matthew is a proud
Yorkshireman and although centrally contracted with the ECB is one of the few
current internationals who consistently jumps at the chance to represent his
county.
There is nothing flashy about Matthew Hoggard, what you see is
what you get, his grit and determination personified but often dour
batting, a quality that has earned him international nightwatchman status.
If the bars empty when KP and Freddie walk in, they quickly fill when Hoggy
strides to the crease.
Matthew has had many wonderful
performances but the brilliant hat-trick at Barbados in April 2004 must
stand out as the career highlight. That performance is closely followed by
a phenomenal 12-wicket haul at Johannesburg the following winter, where he single-handedly bowled England into a series-clinching 2-1
lead.
