A key performer in recent years his runs and wickets will be important again in 2007.

In many respects Anthony (although he never left) is seen by supporters as the 'signing' of the winter. After announcing in October 2006 that he would be leaving the club the closed season's dispute seemed to drag on forever. To everyone's relief, not least Anthony's, he saw the work being done at the club and has pledged at least one more year to the Yorkshire cause.

If Mags had left he would have been hard to replace. A proud Yorkshire man he has matured over the last few seasons to finally deliver the consistent performances with the bat that his early promise had always suggested was possible. A fluent and naturally gifted stroke player who's trademark driving often goes unnoticed because of the simplicity and control he possesses - a sure sign of class.

Anthony has just short of 10,000 first class runs. In recent times he has been a player to be relied upon scoring 1,293 first class runs at 61.57 in 2006 and 1,425 runs at 59.37 the year before. The Corridor cannot understand why a batsman of his quality is rarely mentioned in conversations concerning England.

In 2003 Mags was made club captain, scored some runs and saw England call him up when Flintoff was injured. Averaging 40.20 in 4 Tests with the bat and with 4 wickets at only 14.00 with the ball McGrath's Test career seemed to be over before it started - how many long-term selections have started so well?

What the national selectors seem unable to understand is that Anthony McGrath is far more than a decent batsman who can bowl a bit. He is a class batsman who can bowl more than adequately. The national teams loss is Yorkshire supporters gain.
