Can he get back on track and be the Woody we all want to
see?
Woody scored a thousand runs in his first full
season of 1998. Many thought that he would go on and sustain that level of
performance, earning himself international recognition on the way. His career
has been full of ups and downs.
He was selected for the National Academy
in 2001-02 and was voted the Club Player-of-the-Year and his team-mates
Player-of-the-Year in 2003 when he scored 1,423 runs in the Championship. He was
an ever-present in 2005 when Yorkshire won promotion to the first division, but
2006 was a different story as he played a handful of early games,
scored less than 200 runs and spent the remainder of the
summer in the Yorkshire 2nd Team.
The arrival of Gough, a promised
clean slate and an obvious desire to get back into the 1st Team provides Woody
with a chance to get back on track. He has always been a very popular player at
the club and many people will be hoping he can score the runs in 2007 that his
talent demands.
